The Color of Your Skin Might Mean Doctors Miss the Early Signs of Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer—5.4 million cases will be diagnosed this year. But half of dermatologists say they weren't taught to detect it on black skin in medical school. And only 1 in 10 dermatology residents trained at hospitals where they got experience treating large numbers of patients of color.

That's likely the disappointing reason black people are four times more likely than white people to be diagnosed with melanoma—the most dangerous form of skin cancer—after it has spread. This doesn't mean you should ditch routine skin exams. Instead talk to your doctor if you're concerned about getting adequately checked.
