A Shocking Number of People With Depression Never Get the Help They Need

Talking about depression shouldn't be a big deal. We've seen celebrities and ordinary people share their stories and struggles. That awareness helps, but new research in JAMA Internal Medicine shows many people still don't get the help they need.

Less than one third of adults who screened positive for depression on the study's questionnaire receive mental health treatment. Of course, a survey—no matter how comprehensive—can't account for all of the nuances of depression. That likely means the questionnaire resulted in both false positives and false negatives. Still, the startling statistic is enough to make anyone realize we still have a long way to go until everyone with depression gets the help they need.
