This article is critical of the conventional conception of patient safety which is limited to patient physical well-being. It provides an alternative analysis of patient safety by examining three mechanisms for fostering psychological or emotional well-being and health. They are education, communication and physical facilities. Additionally, it takes cognizance of health providers' psychological health.
