The advances in the treatment of illness and disease coupled with the technological advances which enable patients to get a great amount of information through the use of the Internet and Social Media as well as Self Help Groups have changed how we view social medicine, and how health care is delivered. Doctors are no longer all powerful gods holding a monopoly on our choices. And due to the great number of people harmed through incorrect diagnosis, medial errors and mediation mistakes require that medical consumers be more proactive in their care than ever before because their lives may literally depend upon it. At the same time, the number of stakeholders in the delivery of healthcare now encroaches and threatens the sanctity of the doctor patient relationship as third party payers, employers, managed care companies, etc., present us with an overwhelming number of difficult decisions and trade offs that can only be balanced through greater cooperation between patients and their doctors. Patient Advocacy and Medical Consumerism demand that social policy makers address these issues.
