Setting goals is one thing, but actually sticking to them is, well... yeah. The aptly named website Trump Your Goals is here to help, whether you want to lose weight or run a 5K—albeit in a pretty messed up way.

Here's how it works: Enter your goal, set the deadline, choose the amount of money you'll pony up if you fall short, and answer the question: Who do you hate more, Trump or Clinton? If you don't complete it, the site donates the cash to your least favorite presidential candidate.

This all sounds pretty backward, and to be fair, there's not much accountability here. You just have to say you completed your goal—and we know how easy that is.

Science does back up the so-called anti-charity form of motivation. Studies have shown people are more driven by the possibility of a punishment than a reward. There's also research that supports attaching money to your goals and making them public.

But there are plenty of ways to stick to your goals that don't involve inadvertently supporting a cause you're fundamentally against. Apps such as Commit and Strides can keep you on track, or if you're really the type that needs to put your money where you mouth is, tell a friend you'll buy them a drink if you fall short. Because life does get in the way, and it's not worth compromising your values.

Appeals Court Says It’s Cool for Employers to Discriminate Against Dreadlocks. WTF?!

Last time we checked, hair styles had nothing to do with crushing it at work. Even if you're in the food service industry, where a stray hair could end up in someone's food, all you've got to do is put on a hat or hair net, and you're good to go.

But the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals recently ruled that it's legal for companies to discriminate against employees with dreadlocks. The ruling comes from a suit filed by Chastity Jones, an Alabama woman who had her job offer rescinded after an HR manager said dreadlocks "tend to get messy," so they wouldn't be appropriate in the workplace.

The HR manager allegedly told Jones, "I'm not saying yours are [messy], but you know what I'm talking about." Well, if you're asking us to read between the lines, it doesn't sound like you're talking about a messy bun. The company's grooming policy stated "hairstyle should reflect a business/professional image. No excessive hairstyles or unusual colors are acceptable." So dreadlocks are either unprofessional or excessive. It seems like some thinly veiled racism here, huh?

The appeals court didn't agree. The justices said that while hairstyle can be associated with a person's heritage, the HR managers actions were not discriminatory because hair is a physical characteristic you can change. So by this logic, an overweight person could be denied a job because that's something they could change.

Ultimately, we should be hiring people based on their ability to do the job, not on the way they look.

Mark Zuckerberg's $3 Billion Pledge to Cure Disease Is Great, but It Won't Work

When you're the creator of Facebook, you have some spare change lying around. Thankfully, Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, have pledged to donate the majority of their fortune to charity through their foundation, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. Yesterday the couple announced plans to spend $3 billion over the next ten years to "cure disease."

This influx of cash is huge, but if history has taught us anything, pumping lots of money into scientific research won't magically make disease go away. Chan, a pediatrician, said the foundation will focus on four major diseases (heart disease, cancer, lung disease, and diabetes) with the goal of bringing together the world's best scientists to develop new technologies for a cure.

But the government already does this. You can argue that the current system doesn't incentivize scientists to collaborate (something Zuckerberg and Chan want to improve), but it's undeniable that the National Institutes of Health already pumps huge amounts of research dollars into studying these diseases. In the last 5 years, the NIH spent $8 billion on heart disease research, $5 billion on diabetes research, and $7 billion on lung disease research. Not to mention, since beginning the "war on cancer" in 1971, the government has spent $105 billion on research.

We have made huge advancements in how we treat these four diseases, but we aren't anywhere close to finding a cure. We really hope these two prove us wrong, but for now, we're not convinced this major pledge will have the gigantic effect it promises.

What Dating a Sober Guy Taught Me About Myself

We were watching The Lego Movie. I remember it clearly, because it felt odd to be stressing out while listening to the movie's upbeat theme song: Everything is awesome; everything is cool when you're part of a team. But nothing was awesome, and I was anything but cool.

I was about to have sex with someone new, without being my usual three vodka sodas (at least) deep. While little Legos danced across the TV, I tried to ignore the panic starting to creep in.

The guy I was dating didn't drink. Up to this point, it had been a welcome break from the usual bar scene. But in those minutes before my clothes were about to come off, I actually thought about sneaking out of his bedroom and grabbing something from his roommate's liquor cabinet to calm my nerves.

I missed having alcohol as a security blanket during encounters like this—how a few drinks could dull my insecurities and make me feel like a catch. Now, sober during the act, I focused on positioning my body to look its most flattering, avoiding eye contact with my partner, and honestly, waiting for it to be over.

Later that night I took a hard look at how I'd ended up there. Why didn't I feel hot enough to sleep with someone new unless I was hammered? How have I managed to be sloshed every time I've had sex with a new guy, without ever having to go out of my way (or raid someone's liquor cabinet) to do so?

The answer: I was locked into a pattern—one that will probably sound familiar to any 20-something dating in a big city. The beginning of any new relationship went something like this:

For the first date, we meet at a low-lit bar. I order a drink that I chug way too fast because I feel uncomfortable. Over drink No. 2, I continue to drown out how awkward I feel by asking the standard questions: "What do you do?" "Where are you from?" "Do you know my friend so-and-so? She went to the same college as you." Drink No. 3 makes me feel even more confident and bold, and my date and I get closer to each other. Make out over drink No. 4.

Dates three through five repeat this format again and again, subbing in questions that are less surface level and make it seem like we're actually getting to know one another. Eventually we have sloppy, drunk, first-time sex. But it's OK that it's sloppy. Because we're both drunk and can use booze as a scapegoat.

This is not the case when you're getting it on stone-cold sober in the middle of the afternoon to the rhythm of "Everything Is Awesome."

Alcohol makes a lot of things easier—conversations with strangers who you'd potentially like to make out with being one of them. It also helps drown out the things you're feeling insecure about. Booze makes awkward moments feel bearable. It makes you feel loose, relaxed, and at ease.

But it also clouds your judgment and distorts your perception. Alcohol put a rose-colored (beer-goggled?) filter over whomever I was dating, obscuring the obvious flaws. After three months of dating someone, I’d suddenly become aware of something I hadn't noticed while we were sloshed, like his short temper or jealous streak. I'd stick around for longer than I should've, remembering the good times that I only thought were good because I was wasted for most of them.

Granted, getting out of the bar and away from the drunk-interview style of dating wasn't easy. There were times I missed having that vodka soda in my hand so much that I'd stand as if I were still holding it, like a phantom limb. But for the most part, I haven't found myself on many dates where we're both just standing around, because dating sober requires you to get creative. And let me tell you, even the process of making plans that don't involve picking a bar that's convenient for both of you can tell you a lot about the person you're dating.

Spending a day firing an AR-15 at a gun range? Trying to sneak into Brooklyn's fanciest rooftop pools on a Sunday afternoon? Not for everyone. But there's a bond that gets created when you’re trying something out of the ordinary and outside your comfort zone.

Without alcohol as a crutch for conversation, I've had to learn how to be comfortable with awkward silences. Or take the time to fill them with something thoughtful instead of stream of consciousness babbling. I've had to own whatever stupid thing I've said that didn't come out right. I had always considered myself a good listener; I'd just blame my zoning out on the blasting background music at whatever bar I was at. But dating sober has made me better at having a conversation and actually paying attention to what's being said.

I'm not saying everyone should quit the sauce and plan an adrenaline-spiking first date. But I do think anyone who's out there trying to meet someone could benefit from a few dates that get you both off the bar stool. It's a way better gauge of compatibility than seeing who can shoot the most whiskey.

As for sex without the vodka? I'm still learning how to get out of my head and be present in what's happening, without critiquing myself the entire time. But that's easier to do when you're actually feeling everything that's happening to you. There are no dulled sensations. Nothing feels watered down. Everything is awesome.

GreatistYou: Darby and Adrienne We asked our GreatistYou contestants to reflect on their six-week journeys. Darby and Adrienne set out to establish healthy habits and run their first 10K. Here's how they did it.

Darby: In the beginning I was nervous about eating right. I knew that was going to be hard for me, but I cut back on snacks and fried foods. I also made a conscious decision to drink less. It was hard in the beginning, but by the middle of the challenge, I found myself not really missing fried foods. I ate more salads and lean meats, which I think led to me dropping around five pounds over the past six weeks! And the better I ate, the better I felt.

Adrienne: I was most nervous about my knee situation—and that did prove to be quite the challenge. But whereas before I felt like I needed to sit out of everything, now I'm happy I have different options.

For example, I began swimming at my local pool. I started out doing 45 to 60 minutes of any stroke to get my heart rate up, but then my physical therapist told me which strokes would be least harmful for my knee (apparently the breast stroke can be really hard on your knees!). I stuck to freestyle for 30 to 45 minutes and then did about 10 minutes with a foam piece between my knees. I also did vinyasa yoga at Yoga to the People and used towels or extra mats to support my knee.

Darby: I was also really looking forward to feeling athletic again, and the 10K race made me feel that way. I was uncomfortable at times, and that reminded me of when I used to train for tennis in college.

Adrienne: I think I was most excited about establishing some good habits. With all the changes we were going through (moving, getting a new job), setting up good routines was key. We created a weekly schedule with rest days, cardio days, and strength days. Monday was supposed to be our rest day. But we soon found out that lots of things can come up—particularly during vacation and wedding season.

As time went on and my knee started to feel better, I was able to do more things at home and run outside instead of having to work around pool and studio schedules. My backup plan, if I couldn't make it to a class, was running or yoga at home.

Darby: I also set my weekly schedule every Sunday night. My goal was always to exercise after work. Whenever I had plans, I would wake up extra early and go running. Or if I was crushed for time, I would jump rope right outside the apartment or do jumping jacks.

Adrienne: If I were going to offer advice to someone else starting a new challenge, I would say, "Make a schedule, be realistic, and always have a plan B."

Darby: I would also say, "Don't limit yourself. Don't be afraid to try new things or go out of your comfort zone. And don’t be afraid to make sacrifices so you can stick to your goal."

We've been pretty supportive of each other throughout the whole thing. I know Adrienne really supported and pushed me, and it's been really exciting to look forward to the race, to have that goal.

Adrienne: What I'd like to do next is explore some of the alternative exercises I found throughout this experience—more yoga, more swimming. I want to do things that are a little less damaging to my body. I’m excited to continue with those activities and also run in a more responsible manner.

Darby: Honestly, I want to do another race. I find the whole idea of timing yourself and what place you come in intriguing, so I'm looking forward to continuing to train and getting back into an athletic mindset. That's what really boosted my mood and confidence.

Adrienne: Darby thrives in situations where she can challenge herself.

Darby: I don't know if my future is a triathlon, but...

Adrienne: You could do it!

Darby: It's just been fun to compete. We really had a blast doing the 10K. It was challenging but super worth it.

The Unexpected Way My Job Helped Manage My Anxiety

My anxiety makes interacting with any stranger a stressful and unpleasant experience, but store cashiers were especially problematic for me. There was something about a uniform and position behind a counter that turned even a teenager working their first summer job into an intimidating authority figure.

I would somehow lose the ability to speak at the register, murmuring as I avoided eye contact and communicating via nods and shrugs. I used friends and family as a buffer, either by sliding my purchases in with theirs, handing them the money afterward, or just by begging them to stand beside me for moral support.

I even had dreams about being able to take my time in a store, looking at what I wanted, paying without having a panic attack.

My fear of the checkout line meant shopping alone was nearly impossible. I fantasized about it, probably more than I should admit. I even had dreams about being able to take my time in a store, looking at what I wanted, paying without having a panic attack.

Reality was slightly different. When I finally worked up the courage to step inside a small, nondescript thrift store near my college campus, all I felt was the cashier’s eyes on me. I was the only customer. Maybe I should leave, I thought to myself. Does she think I’m stealing? What if I trip and break something?

Another woman walked in, which just made the situation worse. Can she see what I’m looking at? I wondered, glancing down at the shirt in my hands. They’re judging me for it. I can’t pull this off; this shade of blue isn’t my color. I put it back on the rack and left the store, deciding going in was accomplishment enough—maybe next time I'd buy something.

Two years later, as I bumbled my way through interviews for anything that required an English degree (I felt I couldn't afford to be picky) and my first student loan payment date approached, I started applying to cashier jobs at local stores, simultaneously hoping for and dreading rejection.

On my first day at the craft store, my hands shook as I counted change. I was fortunate that the woman training me was patient and understanding, because everything that could go wrong seemed to. I didn’t make eye contact with the customers, forgot to ask them if they had any coupons, and was constantly told to speak up. More than once I shut the cash drawer before handing out change, which meant the manager had to type in the code to unlock it while I slowly sank into a puddle of shame and disappointment. It didn’t take very long for me to realize I was either going to have to fake it—or get fired.

So I started to pretend like I was acting. I memorized the same lines for each customer to pull off the part of a cashier: Hello, how are you today? Do you have any coupons today? Do you need a bag? Sometimes I slipped and said the lines out of order. When this happened I’d force a laugh. “Long day,” I’d joke.

Humor has been one of my biggest coping mechanisms for anxiety; I can turn a stressful social situation into a mediocre stand-up routine with just the right amount of sarcasm and hyperbole if need be. It didn’t take me long to incorporate this into my shift. If the customers laughed, it meant they weren't noticing my hands shaking as I scanned their purchases. It also meant they weren't yelling.

That was the worst. You would think rational adults wouldn't verbally abuse a cashier, but people would threaten to have me fired on a semi-regular basis, usually over something beyond my control, like an invalid coupon. I learned quickly that if people are laughing at the start, they are more likely to take minor setbacks in stride.

As the weeks turned into months, my hands stopped shaking. I tried new jokes on my regulars. Some even remembered my name. Customers weren’t scary anymore; I knew what to expect from them. I started asking people questions beyond my script: about their jewelry, their purchases, their days.

I attended a play at a local children's theater because I knew the costume designer, a regular at the store. She caught my eye after the performance and waved.

Around that time was when I realized, I love people. They are funny, thoughtful, and all so incredibly different. Everyone has their own fascinating stories, and it seemed like the more interesting the story, the more willing they were to tell it. With each story I heard, I learned strangers could actually be really nice instead of scary.

Then change crept in to other parts of my life. When I’d go shopping and the monologue of questions and insecurities started crashing down on me, I would tell myself, Pretend you belong. Pretend you work here. And I’ve taken to using my “cashier voice” when I make important phone calls or go to a job interview.

Sarah Krenicki While I had been in and out of therapy for my anxiety since I was a young teenager, working in retail was a way to take the techniques I had learned, like mindful breathing, out in the wild. Because it was either show up or get fired, there was no way for me to chicken out, like I'd done on so many would-be solo outings before. As I became comfortable with my surroundings, work became a safe place to experiment, as I pushed the limits of my anxiety.

Even though I have since moved on to a new job involving a cubicle, I still feel a kinship with cashiers. There is no more frightening unknown lurking behind the counter; the unknown has become warm and familiar. Working in retail certainly had its drawbacks, but I look back fondly at my experience because of how it shaped me into a more confident and secure person. While I know trial by fire isn’t what's best for everyone, the social immersion ended up being infinitely better for my anxiety than what therapy alone was able to provide.

GreatistYou Confessions: Regina's Story

Regina After the Contest We asked our GreatistYou contestants to reflect on their six-week journeys. Regina's goal was to be competition ready for her first Muay Thai fight at the end of September. Here's how she got there.

What attracted me most to this whole challenge was that anytime I'd tried to do challenges in the past, I’d make it four weeks and be done with it. And I thought, with six weeks and the social media aspect, there was accountability. Maybe I would stick with it.

In the beginning 99.9 percent of me didn’t think I could do it. But I knew that I would try and that I wouldn’t give up. Typically my goals are something that I want to do but think I can’t do—and I didn’t think I was capable of this.

When I first started sparring with the same people I’m sparring with now, it felt like a joke. I wasn’t able to do anything. I was sparring 10 three-minute rounds, and that was the hardest thing. At the eighth round, I was keeling over and dying. My partner was just trying to keep me going. And now those 10 rounds aren't difficult. When I’m done, I continue training for another two hours.

So in terms of endurance, the progress I’ve made is incredible. I could feel my body becoming stronger about two weeks ago. Originally I had this extra goal of being able to jump rope for about seven minutes straight, but once I started, I realized the jump rope is the easy part—it’s the swim sprints that killed me.

Most people run sprints, but because I have old-lady knees, I swim. So instead of running 30 seconds as fast as I can and then resting for 10 seconds, I do that in a lap pool. Swim sprints suck, but they work. Those and burpees are the two things that helped my endurance the most.

In the past, it's also been easy to let excuses get in my way. And sometimes those excuses are legitimate—like my knee being in pain. But it’s not OK to use my knee as an excuse to not take action. I should try to find some way around it. Listening to your body is one thing, but being uncomfortable is part of the challenge. It’s a sign you’re continuing to move forward. And eventually, it becomes more comfortable.

Probably about a week ago, I started to feel really confident—like I was going to complete this. I can hold my own. I can do this!

Now that GreatistYou is over, the challenge has inspired me to do a couple different things. I’d never restricted my diet before, and when I did, I realized I was addicted to sugar. I don’t want to go back, because I feel amazing compared to when I was eating sugar constantly. So I’m going to moderate how much I eat from here on out.

I’d also like to do a six-week meditation challenge. The past six weeks have been an emotional roller coaster—I haven’t done any mind preparation at all. So meditation is my new personal goal.

The Best Way to Roast Every Fall Vegetable

With the first signs of fall come Halloween decorations (seriously, people?!) and sudden cravings for roasted vegetables. While we can’t get behind putting up the fake spiderwebs yet, we’re so ready for a big bowl of oven-charred goodness—over a bed of brown rice covered with tahini dressing, please and thank you.

There are as many ways to roast veggies as there are people with kitchens, but we’re always on the lookout for cooking methods that save time without sacrificing flavor. Although our favorite fall vegetables (like beets, cauliflower, and acorn squash) couldn’t be more different in looks and taste, we’ve nailed down a way to roast nine of them at the same temperature, and even on the same baking sheet. Is your stomach growling yet?

Let's break it down for you.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Select your veg:

Carrots: Peel and cut into 1/2-inch chunks > Place on a baking sheet > Drizzle with olive oil > Sprinkle with salt, pepper, dried parsley > You can even add a drizzle of honey if you have a sweet tooth > Roast 25 minutes, tossing occasionally

Cabbage: Cut in half lengthwise and remove the core by cutting a cone shape > Slice into 3/4-inch pieces > Place on a baking sheet > Drizzle with olive oil > Sprinkle with salt, pepper, garlic powder > Roast for 15-25 minutes (depending on how crispy you like it), tossing occasionally > Surprise! You now crave this often-hated veg

Cauliflower: Cut in half lengthwise and remove the core by cutting a cone shape > Slice into bite-size florets > Place on a baking sheet > Drizzle with olive oil > Sprinkle with salt, pepper, chili powder > Roast for 30 minutes, tossing occasionally > Eat it right off of the pan (once it cools of course)

Sweet potatoes: Scrub well > Slice into 1/4-inch thick rounds > Place on a baking sheet > Drizzle with olive oil > Sprinkle with salt, pepper, za’atar (if you have it) > Roast for 20 minutes, tossing occasionally > Sweet potato rounds are the new fries

Butternut squash: Cut off tips of both ends > Cut in half at the base (where squash starts to get wide) > Scoop out seeds and pulp > Use a vegetable peeler to slice off the skin on both halves > Cut into 1/4-inch cubes > Place on a baking sheet > Drizzle with olive oil > Sprinkle with salt, pepper, dried sage > Roast for 30 minutes, tossing occasionally > Do you like these or sweet potatoes better?We can never decide!

Brussels sprouts: Trim stems and cut in half lengthwise > Place on a baking sheet > Drizzle with olive oil > Sprinkle with salt, pepper, cayenne pepper > Roast for 15-20 minutes, tossing occasionally > Pro tip: For extra crispy ones, preheat the baking sheet in the oven before adding the sprouts

Beets: Scrub well > Rub with olive oil > Place on a baking sheet > Roast for 40 minutes or until fork-tender > Let cool slightly > Cut off stems/tails > Rub off skin with your hands or a paper towel > Embrace how red your hands get > Season with salt and pepper

Turnips: Peel and cut into cubes > Place on a baking sheet > Drizzle with olive oil > Sprinkle with salt, pepper, dried thyme > Roast for 25-30 minutes, tossing occasionally > You finally love turnips

Acorn Squash: Cut squash in half > Remove the pulp and seeds (and definitely save the seeds for roasting later) > Place squash halves (face-up is ideal) on a baking sheet > Rub each half with olive oil and 1 teaspoon maple syrup > Sprinkle with salt, pepper, cinnamon > Roast for 1 hour > Acorn squash is your new favorite fall veg

No Regrets With Susie Moore Over time, our consistent thoughts become our beliefs. This is a positive thing if our beliefs serve us in some way—like believing you are a healthy person, resilient, or talented in your work. But when our beliefs are based on thoughts that do not serve us now or in the future, they become dangerous.

Sometimes we tell ourselves subtle lies to feel better, which can eventually become our reality. It’s easier to repeat these lies than to face a truth that may be uncomfortable and more painful to accept. These seven lies may offer some comfort in the present moment, but eventually only harm us and hold us back from being truly happy in the long run.

1. "He or she will change."

Newsflash: You can’t “fix” or change anyone—ever. When I was a teenager, I went to an Alcoholics Anononymous meeting because my father was an alcoholic (Al Anon meetings are for relatives and friends too). We all desperately wanted him to become sober. I’ll never forget when the leader of the group said, “You can love and encourage your dad. But there is no law in the world against self-destruction.” He was right.

The same goes for changing a partner’s level of commitment to you, their personal debt, or even their diet preferences. Once you accept someone as they are and that you cannot change them, you will feel free.

2. "I'll do it 'one day.'"

This one is particularly deceptive. One day you will... what—travel the world, write a novel, start your side business? This lie drives me crazy. Because one day you will wake up and there will be no time left to do any of these things. No one even knows how many precious days they have here on planet Earth. Plan it now. Get the wheels in motion now. Do it now. The present is all we’ve got.

3. "If I had more time, I would do X, Y, and Z."

We love to blame time as the reason we don’t do a lot of things—work out, meditate, read. What about 20 minutes of yoga, in the morning, in your PJs, in the living room? What about closing your eyes and listening to a meditation app or podcast on your commute? What about always carrying a Kindle or book in your bag and whipping it out anytime you’re kept waiting during the day?

Another surefire way to find more time: Cut back on Tweeting, texting, and Instagramming. Spending 20 to 30 minutes less on social media per day adds up to a whole lot of time every week.

The biggest magic you can apply to your life now is appreciation.

4. "If I could just have X, everything would be so much better."

The truth is, if we’re not happy now, we won’t be happy when we get “the prize”—the love interest, the pay raise, the "perfect" body. Remember, many of the things you have in your life now were once things you wished for. There is no magic “thing” eluding you. The biggest magic you can apply to your life now is appreciation. Appreciation makes everything better, and it turns what you have into enough.

5. "I’m stuck."

Even though it doesn’t feel like it, we always have a choice. Whether you feel like you can't move to a new apartment, get a new job, or get out of a relationship, there's always a way. I had a life coaching client earlier this year who wanted to start a photography business on the side, but said she couldn’t because she had “no time, no resources, and no idea where to start!”

What she actually was saying was, “If I just tried a little harder, I could be a kick-ass photographer part-time, but I'm choosing to be a victim instead.” She would rather hang onto this lie than risk going for it. It may seem safer than the risk of failure, but I'm telling you, it’s not. It just worsens over time.

6. "I'm not ready to do X."

No one ever truly feels ready for anything—parenthood, entrepreneurship, change. We just begin. That is how we become ready. If you say you aren't ready for something, you are either not really interested in doing it or you are procrastinating (most likely out of fear). Which is it?

You do not need to do anything to deserve a full, rich, and happy life.

7. "I’m not good enough."

This is the biggest lie of all. You are good enough. You are enough. You do not need to do anything to deserve a full, rich, and happy life. As Oprah said, "There's a difference between thinking you deserve to be happy and knowing that you are worthy of being happy. Your being alive makes happiness your birthright. You alone are enough."

Sometimes It Takes a Fifth Grader to Point Out That We Should Never Tolerate Harassment

It may be funny to think about chasing your elementary school crush around the playground, but like any stage in life, there's a point when playing around goes too far. One fifth grader, Zoë, was getting this kind of attention from a boy in her class, and she was not having any of it. So she wrote a list of "rules and regulations" to set him straight:

  • Brandon (@greatistbrandon) weighed in at 155.5 pounds, surpassing his goal weight of 156. Not only that but—thanks to you guys—Brandon was officially crowned Fan Favorite! Here's hoping those healthy habits stick around so he can reach his personal goal of 145.
  • Jasmine (@greatistjasmine) went above and beyond—completing not just Whole30 but Whole32. And on a cruise, no less! She plans on incorporating everything she learned into her everyday life but is looking forward to reintroducing oatmeal and wine. We hear ya, Jasmine.
  • All Darby and Adrienne's (@greatistdanda) hard work paid off. They killed their 10K—and looked good doing it. We loved seeing those big smiles at the finish line!
  • Regina (@greatistregina) learned "an abundance of info in the last six weeks" and is the strongest she's ever been. As a final test, she sparred against her instructor, who passed her with flying colors. But even though she completed GreatistYou, Regina's not done. Her first Muay Thai fight is next Saturday—and you can bet we'll be watching.
  • And, of course, we have to give a special thanks to our GreatistYou mentor, Jessi Kneeland (@greatistmentor), who inspired all our contestants and kept them motivated over the entire competition.

Being in an Interracial Relationship Completely Changed the Way I Date

Julian* was the first non-black man I ever seriously dated. Before him, I never gave interracial relationships much thought. They happened—I knew that—but they never happened to me. The only time men who didn’t look like me approached me was after having several drinks or while shrouded by the semi-anonymity of Tinder. Even then they were generally interested in discussing “the swirl” and how they always wanted to get with a black girl.

So when Julian showed genuine interest in me, I was shocked and extremely flattered—so much so that I bragged about it to my friends. As much as I hate to admit it, I mentioned that he was Latino anytime I could, knowing it would get a positive reaction. I quickly self-checked my festishization, but at the same time, I noticed Julian was not similarly wearing my blackness on his sleeves.

He loved me, but he was also unable to admonish people who openly looked at my black skin with distaste.

Not that he was ashamed of our relationship. He proudly paraded me around and never hesitated to express we were a couple. He was loving, genuine, and thoughtful. More often than not, I couldn’t believe I was lucky enough to find someone like him. I thought he was perfect.

However, you don’t have to be in a relationship to know no one can ever live up to those expectations. He loved me, but he was also unable to admonish people who openly looked at my black skin with distaste. Instead of taking a stand, he swept microaggressions under the rug and masked them with kisses. At first, it seemed like these were the everyday concessions of interracial dating, but I soon felt his nonconfrontational, passive policy weighing heavily on my shoulders.

Once, Julian revealed that his grandmother “jokingly” said, “Be careful. You don’t want to have any dark babies.” To my knowledge, he never checked her on the comment, and we never talked about it again. I tried to explain away my feelings, but I thought about her words every time I hugged her at family parties. Despite her smiles, I imagined how the corners of her lips might turn down at the thought of Julian's and my starting a family together. Not even my name written in glitter across a stocking at Christmas the next year could make me feel like I belonged. While I knew Julian couldn’t be held responsible for his grandmother’s beliefs, the pain of her words stung even deeper knowing he allowed her to say it without protest.

For Julian’s birthday, I recruited his best friend to help me pull off a surprise party. As we sat in the rented Airbnb after setting up, his friend said, “You know, I was surprised when I found out Julian had a black girlfriend.” I was taken aback, confused about why he felt it was appropriate or relevant to make a statement like that. He went on, “I never thought he would date a black girl, but once I saw you guys were serious, I figured, If you like her, go ahead.” In my mind his words translated to: We normally don’t deign to choose black women, but if you like her, I guess it’s OK. His friend nonchalantly disrespected me to my face. While Julian wasn't present at the time, his physical absence mirrored his emotional detachment from the casual racism that hung over our relationship.

Three weeks before we were set to move in together and only days before my birthday and college graduation, Julian ended our almost two-year relationship. It was a surprise to everyone. We had spent the last year planning our lives together, traveling abroad and making decisions as a unit. All of our close friends believed we were heading for marriage.

Needless to say, I was devastated. There are no words to accurately describe the feeling of a broken heart. It is as much physical as it is emotional, and I remember wondering if I was actually having a heart attack as I listened to him say, “I think it’s best if we step away from the relationship.” I like to think of myself as a strong person, but I cried every day for two weeks straight. Getting out of bed and going to work each morning like everything was fine was a wake-up call: This is what it means to be an adult. I blamed myself. I cringed with embarrassment, thinking of the job I declined to pursue because of love. I believed I had simultaneously ruined my career and lost the love of my life.

Eventually, a therapist helped me see there were fundamental missing pieces between us and, more importantly, within myself. We had problems like any other couple: communication issues, ex-girlfriend issues, priority issues, but one of our biggest problems was actually dealing with the interracial aspect of our relationship—something we prentended was auxillary rather than foundational.

I refuse to bargain with who I am to save my partner the discomfort of confronting those closest to him.

I allowed my blackness to be compromised because I thought I was lucky to have someone like Julian. In the end, it only damaged me. Being black is inextricable from my existence, and although I desperately wanted Julian to be my be-all and end-all, the dissolution of our romance showed me I have to demand more from my relationships. I refuse to bargain with who I am to save my partner the discomfort of confronting those closest to him.
