When Spilling Your Drink Can Cause a Chemical Burn
Nothing beats a summer day with a margarita in hand and sand between your toes. But spill some of that margarita while lying out in the sun, and you could end up with a nasty chemical burn like this one:
Eek! Just looking at that makes us hurt. Lime juice is usually the culprit for the reaction, known as phytophotodermatitis but often cheekily referred to as "lime disease" (not to be confused with Lyme disease).
Limes—and other fruits and veggies, including carrots, celery, and lemons—contain furocoumarins, which cause skin damage (chemical burns and blisters) when exposed to UVA light, says A. Yasmine Kirkorian, M.D., a dermatologist at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences.
Unfortunately there isn't research that shows how many limes (or lemons) you can squeeze before you should be worried. “I suspect that casual contact with limes or other fruits—one or two squeezes—is less likely to result in phytophotodermatitis than squeezing a huge batch of limes," Kirkorian says. "But the exact amount of contact that will result in a rash is unknown.”
This is one of those cases where it's better to be safe than sorry. Lucky for us citrus lovers, these bizarre burns are relatively easy to prevent. The best defense: Wash your hands really well with soap and water after handling the fruit. Lathering on sunscreen can also help, since it protects your skin from UVA rays.
We know getting out of your beach chair to wash off a spilled margarita might put a dent in your perfect summer day, but the potential alternative (see below) just isn't worth it.

Caught Between a Friend and an S.O.? Here's What to Do
A: You don’t have a problem; your friend does. She is upset and lonely since she doesn’t have a new person in her life—and you do.
When you were both grieving the loss of your relationships and pissed off together, she had company in her misery. Sadly she doesn’t want to (or can’t) see that this new guy and relationship might be really good for you!
But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be empathetic. Be proactive and find time to discuss the following three topics so that she knows she's still special to you.
1. Tell your friend how important she is to you.
Communicate that you truly want and need her in your life—via phone, email, text, or in-person—and remind her how much you value her friendship. Bring up that ridiculous spring break trip to Miami in college or other fun times you’ve shared together. Recall a time when you shared other good news with her (like that promotion you got last year). You can also remind her about a difficult time when she stood by you and provided support and encouragement (maybe even this recent breakup). The goal: Demonstrate how important she is in your life, even when you might be spending more time with a new guy.
2. Make a date.
There's no way around this one. Time to put the new flame on the backburner and find a mutually agreeable time to see your friend within the next week. Grab a coffee, meet for a drink, or make a day of it with a yoga class and brunch. Mark it on the calendar and whatever you do, don’t forget or reschedule. (For more ways to reconnect with old friends, check out this list.)
3. Talk it out.
You're definitely not alone in wanting to hang out with your new S.O. nearly 24/7. In fact, research shows that when people first get into new romantic relationships, they experience dyadic withdrawal, meaning they spend less time with their friends and family and more with their new partner.
Be up-front and explain that you're trying to find out whether this new person is the one for you. You need the time to figure that out, and you would appreciate her patience as you learn about this relationship. Recognize that she may still be feeling lonely, and allow her to discuss that with you. (If it helps her see the silver lining, try referring to the upsides of breaking up—there always is one, promise.)
Ultimately you may come to realize it's not possible to balance both relationships. If you try these strategies and they don’t work, avoid letting her bitterness jeopardize your happiness. You’ll need to make some hard decisions of whether to take a break from this friendship or express your disappointment to her. Just remember that true friends will eventually understand and support a new relationship.

This Playlist Will Make Your Next Run Feel Like a Dance Party
When it comes to running, we know listening to music can turn a slow slog into a song-fueled success—especially if you're a newbie. Studies show that music can help you maintain a steady cadence (or steps per minute), increase your intensity, and even make you stick to a training plan. 1 Plus, it just feels good! There’s nothing worse than pounding the pavement with low energy and no music to pump you up. Bleh.
Next time that happens, switch things up with an interval run. We tapped Barry’s Bootcamp instructor Matty Maggiacomo to create the perfect playlist to power up your next workout.
"When it comes to running, long-distance or otherwise, the perfect playlist can make a huge difference, and tempo is key,” says Maggiacomo. A song’s beats per minute (or BPM) will help you set your cadence. Calculate BPMs by counting the beats for 30 seconds and then doubling that number. You can also search around sites like Spotify for running music that specifically lists BPMs.
Follow Maggiacomo’s general guide to build your own music mix or use his custom-curated playlist below.
Pick Your Music:
- 115 to 125 BPM = warm-up; a brisk walk or jog
- 120 to 140 BPM = the body of your run; covering distance
- 140 BPMs or above = sprints and all-out efforts
Build Your Interval Running Workout:
- Tracks 1 and 2: Warm up.
- Tracks 3 and 4: Set your pace.
- Tracks 5 and 6: Sprint or high knees on the chorus.
- Tracks 7 and 8: Pick up the pace.
- Tracks 9 and 10: Build your speed with the music.
Press play below to get started.

The Simple Thing You Can to Do to Prevent Insomnia (It's Not a Pill)
It's tempting to take a pill or just sip sleep-inducing tea, but these quick fixes don't address the root of what's keeping you awake at night. As this video from The School of Life explains, your insomnia might be a result of something simple you're forgetting to do during the day—that is, think. Just running through your to-do list won't help, though. It's those bigger, more philosophical questions (Am I happy? Am I in the right job? Am I with the right person?) that need attention during daylight hours—or else they'll pop up late at night. So set aside some time to reflect on your career, relationships, regrets, or purpose and prepare to catch some more zzzs.

This Is the Letter Brock Turner's Father Should Have Written
Odds are you've heard about the Stanford swimmer rape case that's all over the news. If not here's the story: A judge sentenced 20-year-old Brock Turner to just six months in county jail, along with probation, for sexually assaulting an unconscious woman behind a dumpster. And people are rightfully outraged at the lenient sentence—it's far less than the six years prosecutors recommended and the 14-year maximum sentence.
Adding fuel to the fire, a letter by Turner's father talks about how much his son has suffered (yes, his son) and calls for probation only, saying jail "is a steep price to pay for 20 minutes of action."
Twitter user Jez Kemp rewrote the letter to point out the crazy ways the media has talked about Turner's case and sexual assault in general. Instead of focusing on the victim's suffering, we talk about the rapist. His fall from grace. His athletic accomplishments. His lack of criminal history. As Kemp shows with the rewrite, Turner got a lot of attention (and sympathy) while standing trial, but we really should be thinking about and working to protect the victim and the countless others who have stories just like hers.

We Have Good News for Anyone Who's Not Athletic
Have lots of experience as a benchwarmer? Feel like an uncoordinated mess anytime you do something remotely physical? Well, it doesn't matter how much time you spent playing catch or swinging in the batting cages. For most of us, practice won't turn us into star athletes. A new study found deliberate practice only accounted for an 18 percent improvement in sports performance. In other words, it's less Malcolm Gladwell's 10,000-hour rule and more hitting the genetic lottery.
This also means starting a sport as a kid and playing it for years doesn't give you much of an advantage. We assume all-star athletes were playing youth soccer and Little League while the rest of us were learning to walk, but the research suggests that starting sports at a younger age ultimately has little effect on skill level.
So don’t beat yourself up if you’re not hitting it out the park. Just focus on the activities you enjoy, and if there's a sport you've been dying to try, don't let age hold you back.

This Ad Is Basically a Hilarious Reminder to Clean Your Balls
Sweaty balls (or Schweddy Balls, if you're Alec Baldwin) are a fact of life for most guys, especially in the summer months. It was only a matter of time before someone finally tried to capitalize on the sticky situation. Introducing Nadkins, the original "male jewels refresher towelette." How luxurious! If their tagline doesn't convince to clean your testicles, this hilarious video will.
We hope keeping your genitals clean is already a top priority, but you don't need to shell out $12.50 for a 10-pack of Nadkins. Baby wipes or soap and water are way cheaper—and just as effective.

This Guy Ate Chipotle Every Day for a Year to Prove an Important Point About Dieting
We thought we were big fans of Chipotle, but this guy from Washington State has us beat. Devin Cunningham has eaten food from the fast casual Mexican restaurant every day for nearly a year—and yes, he’s managed to lose weight. But this isn’t a Jared from Subway-type story: He’s not here to preach the burrito-a-day diet. Instead he's using the food stunt to critique the whole idea of dieting. In a post on Facebook, he wrote:
I want to show people that they can be fit while still enjoying the food they love. When you enjoy what you eat on your "diet," and you do it in moderation, it is that much easier to achieve your fitness goals.
We can argue whether eating hundreds of burritos over the course of a year is moderation, but Cunningham does have a point about eating things you actually like. Anytime we've nixed a whole food group (like carbs or sugar), we were left feeling hangry and ate more to make up for all the stuff we couldn't have.

Why Some People Always Get Bit by Mosquitoes (and Others Don’t)
If you've ever felt like mosquitoes prefer you more than your friend, it's not all in your head. As this video from The Science of Us explains, some of us are extra appealing to the little pests. They're not exactly drawn to "sweet blood"—though they are more attracted to type O—but rather people who give off more carbon dioxide: people who are larger, have just worked out, or are hyperactive. Even if that doesn't describe you, it's probably a good idea to wear bug spray this summer.

This 19-Year-Old Has a Powerful Message About the Illnesses You Don't See
It can be to easy to think someone is OK if they look like they are. But the truth is, there is so much we don't see. In a recent Facebook post, 19-year-old Aimee Rouski described her experience with Crohn's disease, an incurable gastrointestinal illness, and uploaded photos to make an important point.
In the first, you see her wearing a skirt and tank top, but in the second and third, you can see her ileostomy bag, which helps remove waste from her body, and scars on her inner thighs—both of which would be hidden if you passed her on the street. She posted them to show that body positivity isn't just about weight and unseen illnesses are nothing to be ashamed of. We couldn't agree more.
Read her honest and inspiring caption:
I've wanted to do this for a while because I always see body posi posts for weight but not many for disabilities/invisible illnesses.
First off, I have Crohn's disease; it's a serious incurable illness that nearly killed me, not just a stomachache like most people seem to think.
A person with Crohn's will go through many different treatments including surgery, and it's the surgery I want to touch on now.
My Crohn's has left me with a permanent ileostomy, no large intestine, colon, rectum, anus, or inner thigh muscles, as they were used for plastic surgery on my wounds.
I've always been OK with the stuff that has happened to me, but some people have real difficulties accepting these things so I just want to say this.
No one will know unless you tell them.
People who know will still love you and still find you beautiful.
Your illness is nothing to be ashamed or embarrassed about.

Finally, a Tampon Commercial That Talks About Blood
The length advertisers go to avoid showing (or even mentioning) blood in tampon commercials is laughable. You buy tampons (or pads) to absorb menstrual blood, not the bizarre blue liquid that's usually used to send the message: Yes, this product is really absorbent. That's why we're such fans of this ad from Bodyform, a European sanitary pad company, and its message: "No blood should hold us back."

The Crazy Ways Your Smartphone Is Messing With Your Health
We've heard that our nightly scroll through Instagram isn't exactly the best thing for our sleep, but we had no idea our phone was affecting our health in other ways. As this video from ASAPScience explains, being on a cell phone so much can actually change your body and brain. Not only does phone usage affect your eyesight and posture, but your Candy Crush obsession can cause what's called a "compulsion loop" in your brain—the same one we can credit for the behaviors associated with nicotine or cocaine. Hearing that the average person uses their phone 4.7 hours per day makes us think twice about pulling out our phone next time we're trying to kill some time!
