Carlile has Marfan syndrome, a genetic disorder that affects his connective tissues and has forced him to have more than a half-dozen surgeries. Spiked Vegan Hot Chocolate

Hot chocolate season is here (!!!), and we might be a little too pumped. We <3 cocoa. It's warm. It's cozy. It's dessert-y. And as if that weren't reason enough to chuck your usual midday cup of coffee, this recipe is naturally sweetened with maple syrup and made creamy with almond milk. So tell your vegan and refined sugar-free friends to chill; they can partake too.

Oh, and in case you didn't already know, chocolate + bourbon is a dream come true, so we highly recommend spiking your cocoa—preferrably after 5 p.m.

Spiked Vegan Hot Chocolate

Recipe by: Jamie Webber
Makes: 16 6-ounce servings
Ready in: 10 minutes

INGREDIENTS
1/2 cup cacao powder
1 cup maple syrup
1 tbsp coconut butter
4 cups almond milk
1 ounce bourbon (optional)

DIRECTIONS
1. Combine all chocolate sauce ingredients into a blender until smooth.

2. Add the almond milk to a large pot and start to warm it on the stove, about 10 minutes. Stir often to make sure it doesn’t burn.

3. Once milk is warm, add the chocolate sauce.

4. Stir until the chocolate is evenly mixed in the almond milk.

5. Pour into small mug, sprinkle cacao powder on the top, and add a splash of bourbon.

Shannen Doherty Will Show You What Fighting Cancer Really Looks Like

While there’s no “right time” to start having sex, Dutch researchers found that girls were 44 percent less likely to lose their virginity before 16 if they were close with their mothers. (No wonder Rory Gilmore waited until she was well into college!)

But before you start analyzing all the ways your relationship with your parents changed your sex life, the study has a few caveats. Researchers asked kids how close they were with their parents at age 12 and then checked back in at age 16 to see if they had become sexually active.

While the sample size was large, fewer than 10 percent of participants had sex by age 16, and only a third of the kids who said they'd had sex were women. That's a relatively small group to draw concrete conclusions from, so take these findings with a grain of salt. The research didn't show that children were less likely to lose their virginity before age 16 if they were close with their fathers, though researchers noted in Dutch culture, kids typically spend twice as much time with their mothers than their fathers.

How to Make the World's Tastiest Oatmeal

Bring 1 cup of unsweetened almond milk to a simmer, then add 1/2 cup of rolled oats. Let the oats simmer for about a minute. This recipe doesn’t seem to work as well in the microwave—the bananas and oats really need some time to thicken up on the stovetop.

2. Add a banana.
Once the oats have started to thicken slightly, add a medium chopped banana. (Fresh or frozen works.) Simmer, stirring occasionally, for another 5 minutes, until the banana has melted into the oatmeal and the oats are super thick and creamy.

3. Add your favorite toppings—and eat.

7 Ways to Slow Down So You Can Actually Get More Done!

No Regrets With Susie Moore I've always been obsessed with productivity and action. I pride myself on "getting it done" and being a high achiever. But it wasn't until I bet on myself and became my own boss two years ago that the pressure of constant hustling led me to a breaking point.

When I ditched the paycheck safety net, I felt that if I was to be earning, I had to be constantly producing. With my solid work ethic, I thought this would be a (liberating!) breeze. Turns out it wasn't.

Any moment I wasn't at my laptop or on the move, I felt bad. I felt uncomfortable. I felt guilty. So I filled up my calendar with meetings, said yes to undesirable projects, and was bustin' my booty. But the result was not what I hoped for. Instead of feeling in control, excited, and free, I felt stressed out, resentful, and alone.

This year has taught me about the importance of slowing down in order to speed up. Here's what I've learned.

1. Always ask yourself: "Why?"

Sara Blakely, the founder of SPANX, taught me this. But it took me time to truly implement it.

Before you take on a new project, task, or responsibility, ask yourself, "Why am I doing this?" Keep asking that question until you reach an answer that feels satisfactory. Your "why" should feel certain and comforting. If your answer is, "I'm doing this to please my boss or cousin," or "because I'll feel guilty if I don't," is that good enough?

2. Say "no" twice as often as you normally do.

Warren Buffet once said, “The difference between successful people and very successful people is that very successful people say no to almost everything.”

Saying "no" is the one saving grace that successful people share. (Learn how to do it nicely here.) They openly admit they don't do it all; they just do what matters most to them. This applies to social invitations, additional duties at the office, and even business opportunities. This year I turned down three different clients for different reasons. I swear my business is more prosperous as a result of my only working with people who are aligned with my mission.

As a result, I'm also way more excited about getting up to do my thing daily. What can you be saying "no" to?

3. Stop thinking it must be a struggle.

Last year I interviewed best-selling author Denise Duffield Thomas for my YouTube channel. She said the biggest myth people believe about achieving success and money is that it has to be hard.

Look at people like Richard Branson, Tony Robbins, Jessica Alba, Oprah, and Sheryl Sandberg. They work hard, sure—but they have a lot of fun doing it too. Their work energizes them. This mentality can't help but breed continued creativity and success.

4. Know that fun is the secret.

Have you ever noticed that when you are in a light, chill, happy mood, great creative ideas come to you? Or you start to see a tricky challenge in a new light?

There is no stress in the world. Only stressful thoughts.

When we lose a stress mentality, we start to see how easy it might be to handle that critical colleague or pick up that abandoned blog. We open up. We lose our mental blocks. We are in a receptive mode. When we make a decision to feel good, to see good, to allow good, more ease flows to us. As we lose the hustle mentality in approaching the day-to-day, the hustle factor itself starts to dissipate. Wayne Dyer says, "There is no stress in the world. Only stressful thoughts."

5. Take advantage of down time.

There is a reason CEOs and world leaders always take vacations: Holidays work! They help! Just like your wireless devices, you can benefit from some recharging too.

Just as a painter needs to step back to view her canvas, we also need to take a step back from our life to see it clearly. This doesn’t mean you have to go Cabo for two weeks. It can be as simple as a long solo stroll on a Sunday afternoon or even tea and a 10-minute Headspace meditation on the couch before work.

6. Use inspired moments.

When you start to tie the above together—asking yourself why we're doing stuff, saying "no" more often (oh, the hours and energy saved!), reducing the struggle mindset, opening up to more fun, and increasing downtime—it's inevitable that you will experience increased moments of inspiration. My best ideas have come to me when walking my dog, taking a shower, or even while cooking.

7. Create a "golden hours" rule.

We all have "golden hours"—that part of the day or night when we can power through a big task or to-do list. For me, it's mornings. I do my best writing in the mornings and only take meetings in the afternoon if I can.

Recently, a client of mine was working on an important proposal that required immense concentration. Like me, she’s a morning person. She planned her week ahead of time and set aside two early mornings to finish it. The proposal was completed over four hours on those two mornings. Planning ahead saved her from dragging out the proposal writing for days and days in jagged bursts. It would have otherwise taken her twice the time.

What are your golden hours? And are you scheduling your most important work within them? Milk them and do more with less time.

Yes, taking consistent action is a large component of a successful life. But too often we allow ourselves to become enslaved by the "journey," because it is engrained in us that achievement should come only through struggle. But it doesn't have to be all hustle 24/7.

The journey can leave us with oppressive fatigue. Or a feeling of freedom and fun. And given that the hustle never ends—while we still have goals to reach—I know which path I'm choosing.

Why Getting Crazy Huge at the Gym Isn't as Awesome as It Seems

It was 2009, and I was two months into my first year of university. Aside from drinking alcohol and partying a little too much, I decided I was going to start weightlifting with my buddies. The gym membership was practically free, so it made sense to sign up. I had always been into fitness since I was a teenager—it kind of became my identity, to be honest—so I found some gym buddies, and we set out to become the “biggest” guys on campus. We thought size made us better-looking and more manly. Little did I know that would be the start of several long years of training the wrong way, which ironically, would put my health and identity at risk.

Like most 19-year-olds, we thought we knew it all. Our strategy was to eat everything in abundance and lift heavy weights to test our strength and compete with one other. Now don’t get me wrong; we got stronger, and we did have some kind of routine (leg day, chest day, back day, shoulders and arms day), but I’d be lying if I said we were following a well thought-out program. We'd go to the gym at the same time (8 p.m.) and stay until it closed at 10 p.m., five days a week—that’s 10 hours, nearly a part-time job! But that was our thing, and we made a name for ourselves on campus: The Gym Boys.

We knew absolutely nothing about nutrition. I mean, our idols were bodybuilders like Ronnie Coleman and Jay Cutler. These dudes probably weighed more than 300 pounds and had bulging, rippling muscles, but they couldn’t run a mile if their lives depended on it. Since we wanted to be that big, we decided that we would—no exaggeration—eat 10 eggs, two pounds of chicken breast, two pounds of potatoes, and a handful of broccoli… a day. Yikes!

As you can imagine, we accomplished our goal. I got pretty big by my second year of university and stayed that way until I graduated by sticking with the same diet and training regimen.

WTF Is Bulking?

The whole time, we thought that to get bigger, we just needed to “bulk.” So what exactly is bulking? The main objective is to gain as much weight and muscle mass as possible. Being “ripped” or “shredded” is not the goal; rather, gaining size and strength is. Bodybuilders usually do this for six to eight months a year and then begin the “cutting” phase. This is when you hope all the weight gained is actually muscle. You start to reduce body fat composition through hours and hours of slow, exhaustive cardio until all that remains is muscle.

The problem with bulking is that, for one, it’s for bodybuilders. They don’t necessarily do things for health purposes; they’re focused purely on aesthetics. Plus, it’s important to note that the practice of cutting is not sustainable. That’s why bodybuilders only cut weight for a short period of time around competition season. The bulking is the easy part.

The Downside of Bulking Up

So I was “bulked up,” but actually pretty unhealthy. My clothes didn’t fit properly, I couldn’t run far, and I would get breathless very quickly. Most importantly, I just didn’t feel good. I had spent so long trying to get as big as possible, but for what?

Lifting weights became a huge part of my life, to the point where I thought that was all I had to offer the world. Being the big guy became my identity. The comments and the stares became the norm, and subconsciously, I thought if I ever lost my size, I’d become insignificant. As a Gym Boy, the worst thing you could hear is, “Wow you’ve lost weight. What happened?”

That being said, I knew something wasn’t right. Overeating had ruined my appetite, and I had actually started to dislike certain foods because my meals became repetitive and dry. I would eat every two to three hours, and it always felt like I was eating for two.

The Healthier Alternative

The turning point for me came when I kept ripping through shirts, trousers, and suits at work. It sounds ridiculous, but I was literally busting out of my clothes. Hulking my wardrobe was not nearly as badass as it seems in the movies; it was downright expensive (as was buying all that food)! I had to buy new shirts, jeans, and jackets every three months. Something had to change.

So I buckled down, and after reading a ton of books and reliable information on nutrition, I started to adjust my lifestyle. I made a conscious effort to cook dishes that were nutritionally balanced. I started eating more vegetables. I’d snack when I needed it and made sure I ate fruit every day. I made smart food swaps like cooking with coconut oil instead of vegetable oil and cutting out soda to drink water. I stopped counting calories too, because I wanted to do something that I could do forever and counting calories wasn’t it.

When it came to the gym, I found that training in the morning worked best for me and that actually lifting lighter weights was better too. I used to get joint and chest pains when lifting super-heavy weights, which—while I’m no doctor—couldn't have been good for my health. So I started training my muscles instead of my ego. I reduced the weight and started doing more reps and sets. I increased the intensity by shortening my rest periods. I was actually building better-quality muscle over time.

Things don’t change overnight. It took about six months (and a lot of discipline!) until I started to see noticable improvements in my body. But eventually, I started to slim down while still maintaining muscle. I no longer felt awkwardly big or lethargic. I was healthier, happier, and a lot more confident.

I found that the right nutrition and training program got me the body I wanted and could maintain for the long haul. More importantly, as my body started to change, so did my relationship with myself and my understanding of what makes a man “manly.” To think you’re more manly because you’re big is really stupid. Being manly is an attitude; it’s a personality. In fact, it has nothing to do with your physical appearance—you can be the smallest guy in the room—it's the way you carry yourself and treat others.

I've since come to realize I was blindly following and comparing myself to bodybuilders, but—well, I’m not one. I’m a normal guy who just wanted to be healthier and get in better shape. Yeah, I wanted a set of abs (who doesn’t?), but really, my health and the way I perceive myself are what matters. It turns out, I have a lot more to offer this world than just size after all.

Love Yourself, but Not Too Much

By others’ standards, it seems there’s very little a woman can ever get “right.”

As women, we’re supposed to be a perfect combination of features. Though this arbitrary list of characteristics varies greatly depending on whom you ask, one thing is certain: We are not, under any circumstances, supposed to feel good about our body or our appearance.

Even the new(ish) groundswell of memes encouraging women to love themselves implies that you shouldn’t love yourself too much. “I’m a work in progress,” is about the nicest thing we, as women, are allowed to say about ourselves. If we love ourselves even a little too much, and dare to say, “I’m really happy with all of who I am,” the vanity police step in to keep us in line.

“How dare she!” they quip. “She really thinks she’s something, huh?”

Love Yourself but Not Too Much So here’s my question: What if a woman does think she’s all that?

What if—stay with me here—a woman decided that she was enough? What if, somehow, a woman decided she liked all of who she was? What if she looked in the mirror and thought she was just ravishing? What on Earth is wrong with that?

It’s as though we believe there’s a finite amount of confidence out there, and if one person collects some, it lessens our potential to find some for ourselves. Loving oneself in no way attacks another. Truly loving oneself does not come with comparison or a hierarchy of greatness. Only insecurity does that.

So here's my question: What if a woman does think she's all that?

I even catch myself keeping my own self-love in check, like some kind of awkward secret, so as to avoid the eye rolls or character attacks that are bound to pop up if I make any positive remark about myself. It’s as if I don’t want to stand out in the sea of women reciting “I’m a work in progress.”

These days “being vain” seems to be just one more way to condemn a woman for how she chooses to show up in the world.

It’s insecurity, not confidence, that is so detrimental to ourselves and our relationships.

Let’s stop asking women to be “the perfect amount of confident” and give one another the space to find our own confidence. A woman who is self-assured and grounded in her body and her beliefs has the power to live authentically. She has the strength to trust her instincts and intellect as she moves through the world. She celebrates her successes and good fortune, and in the face of setbacks or failure, she never forgets her worth.

It’s insecurity, not confidence, that is so detrimental to ourselves and our relationships.

Here are four things you can do to start changing the dialogue, owning your confidence, and creating an environment that allows other women to do the same:

  1. Encourage people in your life to speak openly about their accomplishments. Celebrate together. Become a safe space for confidence by encouraging that kind of positive self-talk.
  2. Accept compliments without caveat. You don’t have to minimize or shut down a compliment for anyone. Try this: Just say “thank you.” It’s OK to just receive a compliment.
  3. Applaud other women when you see their confidence, rather than criticizing it. “Good for her” can become a regular part of your vocabulary instead of “Who does she think she is?” Give everyone permission to be themselves and proud of it.
  4. Refuse to take part in confidence-knocking conversations. Instead, you might ask those chatting, “Why does her confidence bother you?” Or again, “good for her” works like a charm. Being mindful of not knocking others’ confidence will have a positive effect on those around you too.

By shifting the way you talk about yourself and others, you can change the dialogue around confidence. Being mindful of not knocking others’ confidence will not only have a positive effect on your own self-concept, it will also have a positive effect on those around you.

We realize that reaching a place where you feel confident in and about your body, where you are at peace with your body—where you actually love your body—may sound like an unattainable goal to some women. But we are here to tell you: You can.

From the time we were little girls, we were taught that our looks determine our worth and constantly reminded that no matter how hard we try (at anything), we’re never quite good enough.

It’s no wonder we struggle to feel confident in so many areas of our lives—our bodies, our relationships, our intelligence, our contributions to the world. It’s frustrating and stifling to feel like your voice doesn’t matter, like you don’t measure up to arbitrary and ever-changing standards, or like everyone else’s preferences and needs come before yours.

What if you could feel confident in every way? What if, instead of wondering how it would feel to be good, worthy, and deserving enough, you already knew? What if you truly believed that losing a few more pounds or squeezing into a smaller size dress had nothing to do with how amazing, powerful, and valuable you are?
