The Lazy Online Dating Strategy That Men Use (and Why It Works)

If you've got two X chromosomes and have spent any time on Tinder or OkCupid, you’re accustomed to messages like “hey beautiful” or “any plans this weekend?” They’re boring, unoriginal, and likely copied and pasted. But as OkCupid co-founder Christian Rudder explains in this video, many guys often send those longer messages (“I’m a huge fan of the Knicks—I haven’t missed watching a game in 10 years and would love to take you to see one at MSG sometime.”) to multiple women. A shocking 20 percent of all messages on the site are copied. This “spray-and-pray” approach isn’t as effective as taking the time to type out a personalized note, but dating is a numbers game, and it works well enough for people to keep it up.
