Most doctors take the Hippocratic Oath—effectively pledging to give the best standard of care to their patients. But that's not so easy to follow if you're a physician at a Catholic hospital. The church forbids the use of contraceptives, sterilization, or abortions (even if the mother’s life is in danger) at its healthcare facilities.
Women could try to avoid these religiously affiliated hospitals, but as comedian Samantha Bee pointed out on her talk show, Full Frontal, they're everywhere. Catholic hospitals are the largest nonprofit healthcare provider in the U.S.—one in six patients end up at one. And in many areas, it's the only hospital around.
