The Secret Ingredient That Takes Oatmeal to the Next Level

Big bowls of rich, velvety oatmeal are the jam. But sometimes it’s a major challenge to make them creamy, unless whole milk is involved. That’s totally fine once in a while, but if you aim to start your mornings with a lighter, healthier meal that won’t make you want to curl up and take a nap, you (and your oatmeal) are in luck. We're about to show you a crazy easy trick to get the world's tastiest bowl. (Plus, you can finally say good-bye to the watery-oats rut you've been in for years.)

How to Make Creamy Oatmeal

The Secret

Add a banana. When you add in a banana to the already-simmering oats, it slowly melts right in and transforms the grain into a thick, pudding-like bowl of porridge.

The Bonus

Banana’s natural sweetness will nix the need for any extra sugar. Plus, a medium banana gives you 3g more fiber. It also delivers 422 mg potassium—a mineral and electrolyte that plenty of us don’t get nearly enough of.

How to Make the World's Tastiest Oatmeal

1. Start your oatmeal on the stovetop.
Bring 1 cup of unsweetened almond milk to a simmer, then add 1/2 cup of rolled oats. Let the oats simmer for about a minute. This recipe doesn’t seem to work as well in the microwave—the bananas and oats really need some time to thicken up on the stovetop.

2. Add a banana.
Once the oats have started to thicken slightly, add a medium chopped banana. (Fresh or frozen works.) Simmer, stirring occasionally, for another 5 minutes, until the banana has melted into the oatmeal and the oats are super thick and creamy.

3. Add your favorite toppings—and eat.
A bowl of oatmeal isn’t complete without a shot of protein to ensure you stay full all morning long. I like a spoonful of almond butter or tahini, along with shredded coconut or ground cinnamon for extra flavor.

Now take a bite and savor the best oatmeal you’ve ever had.
