What even is keto candy?

If you follow a keto diet, you already know that sugar and too many carbs are off the menu when you’re trying to reach ketosis, the fat-burning state.

Although there’s no strict definition, keto is all about that super low carb, high fat life. In general, people on the keto diet shoot for no more than 20 to 50 grams of carbs a day and zero added sugars.

That means keto candy is sugar-free and sometimes high in fat. But how can candy possibly taste sweet without a little glucose, you ask?

Instead of that glycemic-spiking stuff from sugarcane, keto candy uses sugar substitutes like erythritol, stevia, and monk fruit so you can enjoy a sweet treat now and then without messing with your keto #goals.

How to tell if candy is keto-friendly

If the candy aisle’s got you asking “Is butter a carb?,” don’t stress, Regina. Essentially, you’re looking for ingredients that won’t raise your blood sugar and kick you out of ketosis.

When perusing the ingredient list on the back of every candy pack, here’s what to look for:

  • Total carbs: How many carbs you consume each day is a personal choice, and carb content will be labeled clearly on the packaging. But in general, for keto-approved candy, you’ll want to look for options with less than 30 grams of carbs per serving.
  • Net carbs: This is how you find out how many carbs your body is going to digest from what you’re eating. You’ll subtract total fiber (which includes some sugar substitutes) from total carbs. For the keto diet, try to keep this number under 10 grams per serving, although it isn’t always labeled clearly.

Spotlight on sweeteners

You’ll want to look for zero grams of added sugar, but don’t stop there. Your body doesn’t process all sugar substitutes the same way, so some are more keto-friendly than others.

Your body can’t digest these sugar subs, so you can subtract the full amount from the total carbs to get the net carbs.

  • Some carbs:
    • sorbitol
    • xylitol
    • mannitol

These sugar alcohols will provide some calories because your body will digest about half the sugar, so you can only subtract a portion to find the net carbs.

How we picked the best keto candy substitutes

We scoured the internet for the best keto candy so you don’t have to. Here’s how we picked the best of the best:

  • Keto-approved. We did the math on those net carbs to ensure these picks passed the test. Remember: Net carbs = total carbs – total fiber (which includes some sugar subs). Anything with more than 30 grams of net carbs didn’t fly, and many picks are under 5 grams.
  • Tasty. Obvs, keto candy is no good if it doesn’t taste like candy. While most people can tell the difference between regular and sugar-free options, we chose the tastiest substitutes we could find based on consumer reviews.

tl;dr

Keto candy: not so different from your everyday candy — except, of course, that it’s low carb and sugar-free and won’t knock you out of ketosis. While eating too much of the stuff still won’t help your health, it serves as an ideal occasional keto-friendly treat to soothe your sweet tooth.

Home Chef subscription options

Home Chef is super flex. You can order 2 to 6 meals per week and choose how many servings (2, 4, or 6) you want per meal. You can also let them know if you have any allergies and dietary preferences or restrictions.

Bonus: Home Chef can also make you a more adventurous eater. You might try foods you never would have before (or at least not at home).

It can get spendy $$$

Home Chef charges for each single serving. Meals start at $6.99 per serving but the average price per meal is about $8.99. Delivery starts at $6.99 per order. FYI: These charges can add up fast.

37 Healthier Dressings, Spreads, and Marinades To Sauce Up Your Life

A burger isn’t a burger without ketchup and mustard. A salad without dressing? Yeah right. More like a schmalad.

Dressings, condiments, and marinades add some kick to our plates. But when it’s super simple to just pour them out of bottles, the nutrition labels might point to several reasons why store-bought options aren’t the best idea: They add empty calories, sugar, and sodium.

That’s three uninvited dinner party guests to turn away at the door. Instead, make your own — it’s super easy and way better for you.

Here are 37 recipes to make dressing that salad a little healthier, slathering that burger bun a little more wholesome, and marinating that meat a little more natural.

Dressings

Give your salad a funky top hat.

1. Olive oil

healthy olive oil spread or marinade header crop
Darina Kopcok/Stocksy

Sometimes all a salad needs is a drizzle of some really good olive oil. A little fat is never a bad thing.

In fact, research actually found that full-fat salad dressings may help the body better absorb certain nutrients (specifically carotenoids).Goltz SR, et al. (2012). Meal triacylglycerol profile modulates postprandial absorption of carotenoids in humans. https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1002/mnfr.201100687

Extra virgin olive oil (aka EVOO, the purest form of olive oil) typically has the best flavor and is top-notch when used in its raw form.

Plus, it’s high in omega-3s, including oleic acid. These play an essential role in keeping brain cells healthy. It’s also high in phytochemicals, antioxidants that may help people prevent some types of cancer.Ranjan A, et al. (2019). Role of phytochemicals in cancer prevention. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6834187/

2. Fruit n’ nut delight

There’s nothing better than making a dressing packed with whole-foods! It’s like adding more nutrition via your sauce.

Get all the benefits of whole-fruit and nuts by mixing them into a dressing. The addition of nuts also creates creaminess while adding some heart-healthy fats and fiber.

Try blending:

  • 1/3 cup chopped nuts
  • 1/2 cup chopped fresh fruit
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened soy or almond milk
  • 1 tablespoon lemon or lime juice

3. Mighty avocado dressing

It’s no secret that here at Greatist that we’re huge fans of the mighty avocado.

The creaminess of the avocado makes for a great texture without adding too much oil, and the flavor adds richness and depth to any salad.

You can add a rich, tangy touch to any crunchy salad with a mix of:

  • 1 avocado
  • 1 cup plain yogurt (we choose Greek yogurt!)
  • 1/4 diced red onion
  • 1 teaspoon dill
  • some other spices

4. Roasted tomato vinaigrette

Any dressing that has another serving of whole vegetables gets an A+ in our books.

The addition of whole roasted tomatoes to this dressing recipe not only adds tons of great nutrients but also achieves an awesome hearty texture.

Plus, tomatoes are a great source of lycopene, a carotenoid (antioxidant) that’s been associated with everything from a reduced risk of prostate cancer,Fraser GE. (2020). Tomato consumption and intake of lycopene as predictors of the incidence of prostate cancer: The adventist health study-2. https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2Fs10552-020-01279-z all the way to preventing cardiovascular disease.Mozos I, et al. (2020). Lycopene and vascular health. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5974099/

The basics?

  • 12 ounces plum tomatoes
  • 1 tablespoon garlic
  • 1 tablespoon EVOO
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 2 tablespoons red-wine vinegar

It’s a perfect topper for a green salad or roasted veggies or meat.

5. Cheat-sheet buttermilk ranch

Ranch dressing is one of those classic childhood favorites (or maybe late-night college pizza flavors?) that piques our indulgence every once in a while.

But the kind from the bottle, typically packed with buttermilk, oil and egg yolks, and in some cases added sugar, thickeners, and preservatives, isn’t exactly an everyday treat.

Try a mix of:

  • 1/2 cup and 1 tablespoon non-fat buttermilk
  • 3 tablespoons white-wine vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon fresh basil
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon cup chives
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic

You can replace that classic flavor any night of the week (guilt-free).

6. Classic lemon vinaigrette

Emeril Lagasse has it right with this one. His salt-free recipe recreates that classic French vinaigrette flavor without maxing out your daily sodium intake.

What’s the trick? There is none. Just mush together the following ingredients in a blender:

  • 2 tablespoons fresh herbs, including parsley, tarragon, chives, and oregano
  • 1 tablespoon shallots, minced
  • 1 teaspoon garlic, minced
  • lemon and lime zest
  • 1 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup grapeseed oil

7. Sweet honey dressing

Sometimes fruit needs a little dressing too, right?

Try blending up the following ingredients:

  • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons honey (or agave)
  • 1 tablespoon grated orange zest
  • the juice from 1/2 a lemon

You get the sweetness and the citrus kick, as well as the richness of the yogurt.

8. Green goddess

This classic avocado dressing is perfect for summer (well, it’s perfect anytime, but the mint and cilantro give it a summery tang).

Blend:

  • the meat of 1 avocado
  • 1 1/2 cup fat-free buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup fresh herbs (tarragon, mint, parsley, and cilantro work well)
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar until smooth.

9. Maple mustard dressing

Tangy. Sweet. Who doesn’t love the combo of maple and mustard?

This dressing is the perfect combo and goes well with any hearty salad —especially mixed greens with goat cheese, pecans, and beets.

Plus it’s easy to throw together. Just blend up:

  • 2 tablespoons coarse-grain mustard
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • 1/2 cup walnut or canola oil
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • sprinkling of salt and pepper

(Yes, this is a personal favorite!)

10. Easy apricot

Here’s another recipe that uses fresh fruit for a powerful effect.

A chopped, whole apricot forms the base of this dressing along with a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and a teaspoon Dijon mustard, making this salad dressing a perfect mash-up of sweet and savory.

You’ll also need to throw in:

  • 1 tablespoon lemon
  • 7 drops stevia
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

And by using fresh fruit, you eliminate the need for added sugar, which puts it head and shoulders above many bottled dressings.

11. Ginger carrot dressing

The delicious orange pulpy dressing that coats Japanese-inspired restaurants’ green salad has a secret.

You ready? It’s white miso paste!

Try this simple recipe, combining:

  • 1 cup sliced carrots
  • 1 small shallot
  • 1 piece of fresh ginger (measuring about 2 inches)
  • 1/4 cup white miso
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 3/4 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1/3 cup canola oil

12. Classic honey mustard

We’ll dip anything in honey mustard dressing. Chicken fingers? Done. Fries? Absolutely. Apple slices? Hey, don’t judge!

The replacement’s simple, with just four ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1/2 cup olive oil

13. Simply citrus

Fresh citrus juice is a perfect accompaniment to greens. It just makes them pop. A mix of juices (orange, grapefruit, lemon, and lime) is what makes this dressing even more special that your average.

Combine 3 tablespoons of each citrus juice with 1 1/2 cups olive oil, and add salt and pepper to taste. Shake or whisk the whole shebang until it’s well combined.

And that’s it.

If your salad’s full of nuts, you’ll absolutely love drizzling this zingy concoction over the top.

14. Lemon Caesar

Perhaps the most ubiquitous of any salad dressing, the classic Caesar can certainly take a toll on any healthy diet (it is a dangerfood, after all).

Instead of the classic egg yolk-based dressing, try this combo as a healthy alternative:

  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest
  • 3 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1/2 cup olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon plain Greek yogurt
  • a dash of pepper

This makes 2—3 servings, so why not share the Caesar love.

Spreads and condiments

15. Yogurt herb Dijon spread

Non-fat Greek yogurt is a great way to get a creamy dressing without the extra fat (and it adds an extra dose of protein to boot).

Mix the following:

  • 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh herbs

Serve this alongside veggie sticks or toasted pita and watch the mmmms roll in.

16. Ketchup

Even though the shelf-stable varieties might not be such a healthy choice (most are packed with sugar/ high-fructose corn syrup, and all), this popular tomato-based condiment is actually pretty healthy.

(Thanks, lycopene!)

Try this simple recipe made with a base of tomato paste, apple cider vinegar, and a handful of spices.

17. Horseradish sauce

Bloody Mary lovers rejoice! Horseradish is packed with glucosinolates, compounds that also run rampant in cruciferous veggies (like cauliflower).

They are associated with reduced cancer-related damage to the lungs and stomach by carcinogens.Maina S, et al. (2020). Human, animal and plant health benefits of glucosinolates and strategies for enhanced bioactivity: A systematic review. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7464879/ They may potentially enhance your body’s protection against some cancers.

While its sauce has less of a nutritious kick than, say, chomping on raw horseradish, it’s a far more pleasant experience. To make your own, you just need a horseradish root, water, vinegar, and salt.

18. Hot sauce

This bad boy’s OK to get out of the bottle.

Capsaicin is the star of this spicy sauce. It’s what gives chili peppers their heat and can boost metabolism.

Plus, some studies suggest that this compound can help the body use fat as fuel more effectively.Rogers J, et al. (2018). Capsaicinoids supplementation decreases percent body fat and fat mass: Adjustment using covariates in a post hoc analysis. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6088424/

So, if you can handle the hot ones, why not?

19. Avocado spread

This might be the simplest “spread” out there. Here are the steps:

  1. Mash an avocado.

That’s it. Job done. Put your feet up, weary traveller, for you have nailed the avocado spread.

Pro tip: Adding a few drops of lemon or lime juice keeps the color bright.

Because of its high (healthy) fat content, mashed avocado makes a great substitute for creamy sandwich spreads, like mayonnaise. Plus, it’s a great source of omega-3s.

20. Hummus

Hummus is another great alternative to mayo. It’s just as creamy, even more flavorful, and offers a little extra protein and fiber.

Just be careful not to overdo it! More than 1 tablespoon or 2 and this spread can get a little calorie-heavy.

21. Vanilla almond butter

When you want a high fiber, protein-packed snack, try using this vanilla almond butter on the classic PB&J instead of the standard peanut butter.

This recipe uses only five ingredients:

  • 2 cups raw almonds
  • 2 cups roasted, unsalted cashews
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 or 2 tablespoons honey

Take all that with a pinch of salt (literally) and blend it.

22. Pesto

pesto sauce healthy sauce
Kasia Pohl/EyeEm/Getty Images

Basic pesto can turn any panini or grilled cheese into something a bit fancier

Just blend up:

  • 2 bunches fresh basil
  • 2 sun-dried tomatoes
  • 5 cloves garlic
  • 3/4 cup of EVOO

Blend them until smooth and… hey presto! Pesto.

If you’re not so crazy about the pungent garlic flavor, roast it first.

23. Green mayo

Ewwww, what? Don’t run away just yet, though.

We’re not so crazy about mayonnaise by itself, but throwing in a dose of greens makes anything a bit healthier (for those who really can’t get enough mayo) (there’s definitely such a thing as enough mayo, by the way).

Check out this recipe, which takes the classic base for homemade mayonnaise and adds:

  • 75 grams spinach
  • 40 grams watercress
  • 40 grams parsley
  • 2 tablespoons chopped tarragon
  • 1 tablespoon chives

Throw in a splash of lemon juice and a dash of salt and pepper, and this one comes with the Greatist seal of approval.

24. Cranberry orange thyme sauce

When it’s thyme to relive Thanksgiving with one of those turkey cranberry sauce sandwiches (or make use of the leftovers), reach for this fresh cranberry classic.

Flavored with thyme (hence the pun in the opening sentence) and sweetened with orange juice and honey, this cranberry sauce goes great with poultry any time of the year.

Marinades

Here’s the rub…

25. Coffee, coffee, coffee

Believe it or not, that morning cup of joe is actually a great steak marinade. Ahh, coffee. Improving both your mornings and your evenings.

It’s perfect for tenderizing red meat in place of high sodium, bottled marinades.

Don’t want to brew a pot first? Coffee grounds also work as a great rub for grilling meats.

26. Mojito mbharinade

A marinade with rum in it? Yes please, and “Yo ho ho!” to you too.

Try a mix of:

  • 2 shallots
  • 1/4 cup mint
  • 1/4 cup rum
  • 1/2 cup lime juice

Throw in some lime zest, salt, and canola oil for a festive flavoring that’s great with chicken.

27. Chili spice rub

Packed with capsaicin, chili peppers and powders are a great addition to any meaty meal.

Mix equal amounts of:

  • cumin
  • chili powder
  • paprika
  • cayenne pepper
  • oregano

Then, rub this potent mixture on chicken or steak before roasting or grilling. Be careful! This is a spicy one.

28. Garlic rub

Let’s just face it — garlic makes just about anything better. That definitely includes grilled and roasted meats.

For every 1.5 pounds of meat, combine:

  • 8 cloves garlic
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest
  • a sprinkle each of salt and pepper

Rub it on the meat and let it sit for a few hours before cooking. You’ll have lovely, tender, garlicky goodness just waiting for you.

29. Classic Indian

Want tasty tandoori chicken from any oven or grill? It’s easy. (And no, you don’t need to buy a Tandoor oven.)

Marinate chicken or beef in the following and watch your mind get blown:

  • 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground coriander

30. Easy teriyaki

Simply mix:

  • 1/3 cup water
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup soy sauce
  • 1 crushed clove garlic
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

31. Dijon sun-dried tomato

This is a Greatist family favorite.

Combine:

  • 1 teaspoon thyme
  • 1 teaspoon rosemary
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 2 sun-dried tomatoes in oil
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

Spread the whole business on top of salmon or chicken, and bake until cooked through. Voila! Deliciousness.

32. Terrific Thai

This marinade is perfect for fish, shellfish, and chicken.

The mixture goes like this:

  • 1/2 cup unsweetened coconut milk
  • 1 shallot, minced
  • the juice of 1 lime
  • 2 tablespoon fresh chopped cilantro or parsley
  • 1/2 tablespoon chili paste or powder

33. Simple lemon and herb

Perfect on chicken, fish, or pork, a combination of lemon zest and fresh herbs can never go wrong.

Combine the following magical elixir for zingy simplicity:

  • the juice and zest of 1 lemon
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh herbs

Marinate the meat for up to 30 minutes. Careful, though — the citrus juice can start to “cook” the meat (especially fish) if left too long (naughty citrus).

34. Turkish delight

Take a trip overseas (or as close as you can get to one in 2020) with this Turkish-inspired marinade, perfect for lamb or chicken (especially in kebab form).

Combine:

  • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • the juice and zest of 1 lemon
  • 1 cup chopped fresh mint
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • a sprinkle of salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice

Mix and marinate the meat for anywhere between 1 and 4 hours. Grill it for the best results.

35. Rosemary balsamic

This one’s simple and does a fine number on chicken thighs.

Mix together:

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
  • 6 garlic cloves
  • 6 fresh rosemary sprigs
  • a hearty grind of pepper

Marinate for up to 24 hours (that’s a long soak but it’s worth it) and grill or bake for a soft, fragrant, tender cook.

36. Classic chipotle

Chipotle chilies in adobo sauce make this marinade super special. Another hot one, and the overnight marinade soaks the smoky flavor right through the meat.

For every pound of meat (chicken or pork work wonders with this marinade) combine:

  • 1 chipotle in adobo
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • the juice of 1 lime
  • 1 teaspoon vinegar (of your choice)

Marinate the mixture overnight for maximum impact.

37. Honey lime marinade

For a stark, vivid reminder of tropical climes, cover your chicken in this sweet and sour favorite. Bonus points: It’s a piece of cake, too.

Combine:

  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1/3 cup reduced sodium soy sauce
  • the juice of 2 limes

This mix should cover about 4 chicken breasts.

Takeaway

Whether you’re dipping, dunking, spreading, or submerging your food in sauce (and whether it’s a salad or steak), taking the time to make your own sauciness is a special type of magic.

If you don’t have the time, don’t worry. There are some healthier choices out there on the shelves of your nearest supermarket. Check them out here.

The 10 Step Stairway to Skin Heaven — A K-Beauty Ritual

You may have seen an explosion of articles floating around the internet in recent years concerning “the Korean 10-step skin care routine” and wondered if you were missing out.

Skin care enthusiasts in the West may have looked at medicine cabinets and beauty counters full of exfoliants and retinols and wondered where those extra steps could be coming from and what they could offer.

10-step-korean-skin-care
Design by Alexis Lira

What is the Korean 10-step skin care routine?

Taiwanese American skin care blogger Jude Chao (aka Fifty Shades of Snail or @fiddysnails) is a convert who discovered K-beauty after dipping her toes into the Skincare Addiction subreddit.

She explains, “The ‘Korean 10-step skin care routine’ is a shorthand for the concept of the long, multilayered skin care routine that K-beauty popularized all over the world. In contrast to the conventional three-step cleanser-toner-moisturizer routine that many of us grew up with, the ‘10-step skin care routine’ incorporates products like essences, serums, ampoules, and sheet masks into it.”

The flexibility of the concept is what’s so great for so many people.

While there are some variations, the 10-step routine follows this order:

  1. oil-based cleanser
  2. foaming or water-based cleanser
  3. exfoliator (only 1 or 2 times a week)
  4. toner
  5. essence
  6. serum or ampoule
  7. sheet mask
  8. eye cream
  9. moisturizer
  10. sun protection, if it’s daytime

Phew.

Eagle-eyed readers may have noticed there’s a greater focus on hydration than on exfoliation, which is more common in a Western routine. But Chao reminds us that it’s not one-size-fits-all.

“What any one person’s skin care routine emphasizes is very dependent on the person. The flexibility of the concept is what’s so great for so many people. Personally, I do front-load my routine with some AHA, BHA, and tretinoin. Then the hydrating and nourishing steps follow — they’ve helped a ton in preventing or mitigating side effects like dryness and irritation that can often result from using strong actives. My routine, like many others’, is a hybrid of both Asian and Western products.”

You don’t have to stick strictly to 10 steps to follow this routine, either. The many-layered approach may be just what your skin has been waiting for, or it could be too much and clog your pores.

As long as you move slowly and take things literally one step at a time, you should be able to decode the signs your skin is sending when you implement new steps.

“I’ve always advised people to add only one new product to their routine at a time and use it for at least a couple of weeks before adding anything else,” Chao adds. “That way they can see whether their skin responds well to the product and whether they’ll really feel the need for any more.”

“In terms of steps alone, people need to pay attention to whether their skin is actually even absorbing all the product.” Chao says. “If they’re getting to a point in their routine where the products are just sitting on top of their skin even after waiting around for a while, it becomes clear that that’s quite enough for them.”

As long as you move slowly and take things literally one step at a time, you should be able to decode the signs your skin is sending when you implement new steps.

Your mileage may vary!

Skin health and glow are not just dependent on your skin care routine. Factors like genetics, environment, overall health, and diet can come into play too. If doing 10 steps overwhelms your skin, don’t force it. It’s OK to scale back to a simpler skin care routine.

Q&A about the experience

We did a lightning round of questions with Chao about her experience and knowledge of this routine.

10-step-korean-skin-care

Do you have to use Korean brands only?

No, but Korean brands could be better prepared for the job.

“I’m still seeing the majority of Western options suitable to a K-beauty type routine at midrange and high-end price points rather than in the drugstore. Korean brands have… plenty of products to choose from at any budget,” says Chao.

Who won’t benefit from the routine, and what are the risks?

“The main risk is simply that people will use products unsuitable for their needs. A lot of vendors sell prefab skin care routine kits, claiming that they’ve curated routines perfect for various skin types or issues, but it’s not that simple or that one-size-fits-all. Again, it’s best for people to curate their routine one step at a time. That way they can stop at the right point for their own skin.”

Do you have to use all 10 steps morning and night?

“Those of us who do use a long routine generally reserve it for night, when we have the time! Morning routines tend to be much more streamlined and focused on the basics of moisture and sun protection.”

Will the 10-step routine help me achieve glass/honey/dewy skin?

“That’s [the goal of] a long, multilayered routine. Packing layers of hydration into skin will plump it up, resulting in a smoother texture, and the increased water content in skin catches light differently, providing that glassy glow we love!”

What results should I expect, and how long will it take?

10-step-korean-skin-care

“Results really depend on the individual, what products they’re using, and what their skin is like to begin with, but people who take the time to put together a good routine for their skin and who stick with it generally see a huge improvement in the radiance and texture of their skin!”

“Hydration and moisture show results quite quickly, within a couple of weeks to a month, while products that aim to improve the structure and function of skin (like vitamin C, retinoids, and anything that targets hyperpigmentation or collagen production) will take a few months.”

OK, still interested? Here we go into the (removal of the) gritty details.

Step 1. Oil cleanser

Purpose and benefits

This is step one of the double cleansing method made famous by K-beauty. Believe it or not, oils can act as a powerful cleanser. They’ll draw out and dissolve excess oil, dirt, makeup, and anything else that might be on your face.

Cleansing is an important part of keeping skin clear and glowing, and you want to start with a clean slate before moving on to your next steps!

Skip if…

Your skin is too sensitive to double-cleanse or your skin reacts poorly to oils.

Popular cleansers for step 1

All skin types: You can use a true oil or a cleansing balm for this step. Banila Co Clean It Zero is an OG cleansing balm and is still beloved for good reason. It’s super effective at removing even the clingiest mascara.

Acne-prone skin: It’s OK if there’s a slight film left behind at this step, because you’ll follow up with a second cleanser. But for any of our acne-prone friends who really want to avoid excess oils, the Paula’s Choice Perfect Cleansing Oil lives up to its name by washing completely off the face without a trace of residue. The clear packaging also feels super luxurious on your counter.

Step 2. Foam- or water-based cleanser

Purpose and benefits

This step ensures that your skin is squeaky clean before you move on to the rest of your routine. Check the pH of this cleanser to be sure it won’t strip your skin — that’s the opposite of what we’re aiming to achieve with this routine!

Skip if…

You have ultra-dry skin and you want to use only an oil-based cleanser.

Popular cleansers for step 2

All skin types: Hada Labo Tokyo Gentle Hydrating Cleanser with Hyaluronic Acid will get you clean without making you feel like you need to sprint to your moisturizer. Clean skin and parched skin don’t have to go hand in hand!

Acne-prone skin: Clinique Acne Solutions Cleansing Gel was formulated specifically with acne-prone skin in mind. It’s lightweight and has salicylic acid to target any active breakouts.

Step 3. Exfoliator

Purpose and benefits

Freeing yourself of dead skin cells once or twice a week can help acne scars fade faster, products absorb better, and your skin feel smoother. If you want to avoid stripping your skin, you might consider replacing one of your cleansers with a gentle facial scrub on days you exfoliate.

Skip if…

You have sensitive skin, active breakouts, or open skin or you exfoliated the day before.

Popular exfoliating products for step 3

All skin types: Tatcha The Deep Cleanse is a gentle exfoliant that will remove dead skin cells without damaging your precious skin.

Acne-prone skin: This Blackhead Solutions 7 Day Deep Pore Cleanse & Scrub from Clinique is targeted toward blackheads, but it’s a true multitasker. You can also use it as a mask if you feel like your pores need a soak. While the product is framed as a daily cleanser, we’d recommend sticking to using it a couple of times a week to avoid unnecessary irritation.

Step 4. Toner

Purpose and benefits

This will prep your skin for what’s to come. Keep in mind that if you’re shopping Asian brands, many use the word “lotion” to describe what Western brands call “toners.” Don’t be confused!

Skip if…

You’re on a strict budget or running low on time.

Popular toners for step 4

All skin types: COSRX comes through with Hydrium Watery Toner. It’ll make sure your skin is balanced and hydrated after your cleansing routine.

Acne-prone skin: Good Molecules Niacinamide Brightening Toner offers the skin-changing magic of niacinamide at an affordable price.

Step 5. Essence

Purpose and benefits

The 10-step routine starts with thin products and works up to thicker products, adding layers of nourishment along the way. Your essence is the first step of nourishment as you build up to your moisturizer.

Skip if…

You’re on a time crunch or a budget.

Popular essences for step 5

All skin types: Chao likes the COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence (the mucin is collected from humanely treated snails) to nourish and protect her skin from irritation and damage. She finds that her skin heals and bounces back faster when using this.

Acne-prone skin: Another favorite of Chao’s is the Missha Time Revolution Red Algae Treatment Essence. “This hydrating essence plumps my skin up beautifully,” she says, noting that she finds her skin smoother after using it.

Step 6. Extra-strength treatments (serums vs. ampoules)

Purpose and benefits

Serums are the secret sauce that will really put you on the path toward the glow you seek. They’re concentrated treatments that can target whatever specific skin concerns you may have. Ampoules are like pumped-up versions of serums.

Skip if…

You used an exfoliating toner. You’ll want to stick to a nourishing, hydrating serum and avoid using any additional chemical exfoliants or peels. Avoid doubling up on harsher ingredients in your routine.

More on ampoules

Ampoules are typically housed either in dropper packaging or in individual glass or plastic packages to ensure that you’re dispensing the perfect amount of product each time and that your product is at maximum efficacy without any previous oxygen exposure.

Because of the potency of these products, you’ll want to use them as a special treat for your skin as opposed to a daily staple. You could use them for a few days leading up to a special event or treat them like an exfoliant and implement them into your routine once or twice a week.

Popular serums and ampoules for step 6

Serums for all skin types: Sulwhasoo First Care Activating Serum is a lightweight gel you can actually apply after cleansing. Chao says it preps her skin to absorb more product, and she’s found her skin to glow in a natural, rosy way over time.

Serums for acne-prone skin: Try COSRX AHA 7 Whitehead Power Liquid. It has glycolic acid as well as more hydrating ingredients and antioxidants to protect and balance the skin. The name is a bit opaque on this one (what kind of liquid is it?), but you can feel free to use it like a serum.

Ampoule: The Plant Base Time Stop Collagen Ampoule. This ampoule is hydrating, soothing, and skin-smoothing and addresses signs of aging. What more could you want?

Step 7. Sheet mask

Purpose and benefits

Sheet masks are a unique way to mask because the nature of the application means the maximum amount of product will be pushed into your skin rather than evaporate into the air.

You might notice that the package will have a lot of extra serum at the bottom. Don’t save it for later — apply it to your neck, your chest, and the backs of your hands for maximum glow.

Skip if…

You’re concerned about the typically single-use nature of the packaging or you’re on a time crunch.

Popular sheet masks for step 7

All skin types: A’PIEU Daily Sheet Mask — Green Tea has the budget-conscious and the eco-conscious folks in mind. You get 33 hydrating, soothing, antioxidant-packed masks all in one package.

Acne-prone skin: Mediheal Tea Tree Essential Blemish Control Sheet Mask has enough acne-fighting ingredients to hit acne from every angle. Tee tree, rosemary, willow bark, chamomile, and Asiatic pennywort will keep your skin soothed and blemish-free.

Step 8. Eye cream

Purpose and benefits

While you may not necessarily need a designated eye cream, if you have super-sensitive eyes or very specific goals for your eye area, you may want one to moisturize, de-puff, or minimize signs of aging.

Skip if…

Your moisturizer is safe for the eye area or you don’t have specific goals for your eyes that are separate from your overall skin goals.

Popular eye creams for step 8

Elensilia CPP Collagen 80% Intensive Eye Cream is a good choice for anyone worried about fine lines and wrinkles or tired-looking under-eyes.

Step 9. Moisturizer

Purpose and benefits

Moisturize to keep your skin hydrated and your skin barrier balanced.

Skip if…

Please don’t ever skip your moisturizer!

Popular moisturizers for step 9

All skin types: Tarte Baba Bomb Moisturizer is designed to deeply quench your skin with babassu, avocado, and green tea. As a plus, the packaging combines the luxury of a jar with the hygiene of a pump. It’s the little things.
Acne-prone skin:
In addition to hydrating, Klairs Midnight Blue Calming Cream soothes the skin, so it’s the perfect choice for those who deal with acne, redness, or irritation.

Step 10. Sun protection

Purpose and benefits

The sun is kryptonite to your skin, so you’ll want to protect yourself from it at all costs. Sun exposure can also speed up signs of aging, slow the healing of acne scars, and, ya know, cause skin cancer… so protect your skin, people!

Skip if…

It’s nighttime and you’re going to bed.

Popular sunscreens for step 10

All skin types: Thank You Farmer Sun Project Water Sun Cream. K-beauty is known for having the best sunscreens, and this formula doesn’t disappoint. It’s hydrating and dewy and doesn’t leave a white cast. We love to see it.

Acne-prone skin: Neogen Day-Light Protection Sunscreen/SPF 50 PA+++ keeps you fully protected from the sun, but its lightweight formula won’t leave you feeling greasy or claustrophobic.

So, who started this trend?

“Over the past few years, different brands and people have claimed they’re the ones who invented the 10-step routine or coined the term, but ultimately it wasn’t any one person’s discovery,” Chao explains. “It was a gradual evolution, driven by the development and marketing of ever more specialized products (and the desire to sell more products to skin care consumers!).”

Though we may not know the exact origins of the 10-step routine, we do know that K-beauty has forever changed the skin care landscape worldwide. Gone is the veil of mystery surrounding what’s in our products. Now we shop by ingredients and formulations that have piqued our interest in an effort to re-create the refreshed image of what skin looks like.

And we may even have the 10-step routine to thank for normalizing “skin care as self-care.” Every step is part of a long, luxurious ritual that lets us relax and treat ourselves after a long day.

Where to shop K-beauty

While the 10-step routine can be fun and offer great results, it might not be for everybody. Every person’s skin reacts differently to using a lot of products, and time and budget constraints could make it challenging to implement for some. If you’re interested, make sure you have your basics covered, and you can slowly build from there.

K-beauty has become much easier to get your hands on in recent years. You might want to try Soko Glam to get started — the site has a wide selection of curated products and a wealth of information.

Brands like COSRX and Missha, which are easy to find at Ulta or Amazon, might be a good place to start. They’ve been in the game for a long time and have a variety of tried and trusted formulations for all skin types.

Above all, remember that going through these steps is about making the time to care for yourself. So take your time. You deserve it.

Cocoa Inspo! 11 Ways to Make Hot Cocoa Extra AF

a blue mug of extra fancy hot cocoa on a blue background
Getty Images

It’s cold-weather season, which means throwing on your comfiest sweaters and warmest slippers and reaching for your favorite mug for a cup of hot cocoa pretty much every night (just me?). If you’re looking to switch up your regular hot cocoa routine or make a special occasion mug of cocoa, you’ve come to the right place!

Your favorite powdered hot cocoa mix is the perfect base to experiment and come up with your own fun combinations. To get you started, here are 11 of our favorite ways to make your hot cocoa extra AF.

1. Mint hot cocoa

Go ahead, add some Andes Mints to your hot cocoa! Chop up a few Andes Mints, melt them into your cup of cocoa, and finish it with a swirl of whipped cream, a sprig of fresh mint, and a whole (unmelted) Andes mint on top!

Why we love it: Andes Mints are the perfect combo of creamy chocolate and refreshing mint flavor. Adding a couple to your regular hot cocoa creates a decadent mug of hot chocolate with subtle mint notes.

2. Chai hot cocoa

Cozy up with a cup of this warm and comforting drink! It’s super simple to make: Just warm up a milk of your choice (we recommend almond) and steep a bag of chai tea in it for a couple of minutes. Then add the milk to your cocoa mix! Top with a generous helping of whipped cream and garnish with candied ginger pieces.

Why we love it: The delicate blend of spices, including the sweet heat of ginger, will pair nicely with the chocolate and warm you up almost instantly.

3. Cinnamon hot cocoa

Make your standard cup of hot cocoa, finish it off with a cinnamon sprinkle on top, give it a mix, and it’s ready to drink! (We recommend Saigon cinnamon, but this will work with any cinnamon you have on hand.)

Too simple? Serve it with cinnamon-infused whipped cream (add a few shakes of cinnamon to your regular whipped cream) and a cinnamon stick!

Why we love it: Adding a dash of cinnamon to your cup of cocoa is the easiest way to transport yourself into the holiday spirit. Just make sure to mix the cinnamon into the hot cocoa until it’s thoroughly dissolved — we don’t want any cinnamon challenge mishaps!

4. Spicy hot cocoa

Don’t be afraid to take your hot cocoa and make it spicy! Add a pinch of cayenne or chile powder to your mug of cocoa. (Fair warning: Less is more here.) Start with a small amount of cayenne or chile powder and add more to taste. Wanna live life on the wild side? We suggest topping your spicy cocoa with Hot Tamales!

Why we love it: This is ideal for those of us who love sweet and savory flavor combos with a little bit of heat. The cayenne cuts some of the cocoa’s sweetness and makes a glorious drink to savor slowly.

5. Cookie butter hot cocoa

Ah, cookie butter. We love it on anything — or even by the spoonful! Why not fancy up your hot cocoa with a spoonful of this delicious spread made from crushed speculoos (spiced shortbread) cookies? For this, we recommend using a dark chocolate hot cocoa base. Pro tip: Serve with a Biscoff cookie and dunk to your heart’s content!

Why we love it: The cookie butter adds a nuanced, slightly gingerbread-like flavor that pairs beautifully with a bitter dark chocolate cocoa mix. It’s a great way to use up that jar of cookie butter that’s hanging out in your pantry!

6. Nutella hot cocoa

This two-ingredient hot cocoa is our absolute favorite. All you need to make it is Nutella and hot milk. That’s right — no hot cocoa mix required!

Warm a cup of milk in a small saucepan (or pop it in the microwave), and then add a heaping spoonful of Nutella and stir until thoroughly incorporated. Top it off with a dollop of whipped cream and a Ferrero Rocher chocolate to really amp up the hazelnut-chocolate experience!

Why we love it: Nutella makes a beautiful, thick, and creamy hazelnut hot cocoa! You can add more or less depending on how creamy you want your cocoa to be. We promise this will be a hit if you love hazelnut.

7. Espresso hot cocoa

Craving a cup of hot cocoa but need a caffeine boost? Add espresso! Prepare your hot cocoa to your liking and finish it off with a shot of your favorite espresso. You just made yourself a mocha without the expensive trip to the coffee shop!

Why we love it: We’re adults, right? We shouldn’t feel like we have to choose between one bean (chocolate) and another (coffee). The shot of espresso is perfect to add the robust flavor (and caffeine) of coffee while the chocolate mellows out any bitterness. It’s a great way to get your daily dose of energy!

8. Boozy hot cocoa

Switch things up for your wintertime Zoom happy hours! Try adding a shot of spiced rum or Bailey’s Irish cream or, if you’re a beer lover, a splash of your favorite chocolate stout. Finish it with a Pirouette chocolate-filled wafer as a straw!

Why we love it: The possibilities are endless! Tap into your inner mixologist and get creative with your boozy hot cocoa pairings.

9. Maple syrup cocoa

Perfect for breakfast and brunch! Adding maple syrup to your cocoa will give it a delightfully buttery, almost butterscotch-like flavor. Finish with a generous dollop of whipped cream drizzled with even more maple syrup that you can stir into your mug as you drink. For extra fun, use a cinnamon stick as your stirrer!

Why we love it: This is a beautifully decadent hot cocoa that just screams fall flavors. Close your eyes, take a sip, and be transported to a fall forest of your wildest dreams.

10. Dulce de leche hot cocoa

You want decadence in a mug? Whip up this super easy and rich dulce de leche hot cocoa! While warming up your milk, add a spoonful of dulce de leche (or caramel sauce) and hot cocoa and stir until the caramel is completely melted. Drizzle some more dulce de leche along the sides of your mug before pouring your hot cocoa.

Top with whipped cream and more caramel drizzle and serve with a churro on top or on the side. For a less sweet version of this drink, skip the spoonful of dulce de leche in the milk and just enjoy the dulce swirls.

Why we love it: You can never go wrong with caramel and chocolate! The sweet dulce de leche swirls coat the mug as they slowly melt, which is just deliciously satisfying. The churro “topper” can be dipped directly in the mug and used as a stirrer.

Hi Greatist readers,

Happy Monday! I’m back for the month of November to talk about self-care, which is a huge practice for me. (If you missed my series on work boundaries last month, click here.)

Self-care is vital for our well-being, which is why I highly recommend it to all my clients as a therapist. And there are six dimensions of self-care to get to know. Stick with me, every Monday this month, to learn all about them.

Dimension #1: Emotional self-care

As we await election results, tending to your emotional well-being is critical for your mental health. My first question to you is: How are you feeling? Start this practice by getting in tune with your emotions and naming them. BTW, “good” and “OK” are not feelings! 😉

Our emotions are messengers, and when we learn to develop a healthy relationship with them, we can get a better understanding of how to tend to our emotional needs.

So here are three journaling questions I’d like you to commit to daily this week to tend to your emotional health:

  1. On a scale of 1 to 10, how am I feeling? (Bonus: Name the feeling using this emotional wheel.)
  2. Who can I ask for help?
  3. What do I need to feel supported?

I’ll be checking back in with you next week to see what you discovered and cover the next dimension: physical self-care. See you next week!

With love,
Minaa B.

17 Reasons to Row, Row, Row Your Way to Killer Fitness

In a gym packed with ellipticals, treadmills and bikes, the rowing machine was once the piece of equipment you could count on to be unoccupied. Well, not anymore.

Suddenly, fitness experts are raving about the benefits of rowing machines — aka, ergometers or ergs.

So get ready to kiss spinning goodbye, ‘cuz it’s all about rowing now, baby.

All the rowing perks…

  1. full-body burn
  2. approachable workouts
  3. low-impact wins
  4. meditative moves
  5. cardio-licious
  6. buh-bye, treadmill boredom
  7. affordability
  8. #LegDay
  9. personal records
  10. to burn calories
  11. it’s trendy
  12. for fun!
  13. fast fitness
  14. cardio + strength training
  15. brain gains
  16. convenience
  17. to shake things up

Whether you buy your own machine or hop on one at the gym, rowing offers big benefits. Keep scrolling for the deets.

17 reasons to reach for the rowing machine

1. You’ll get a full-body workout

Maybe you think rowing = ripped arms. But according to the American Fitness Professionals Association, rowing is 65 to 75 percent legs and 25 to 35 percent upper bod.

It’ll shred your upper back, pecs, arms, abs, and obliques. It’ll also strengthen those quads, calves, and glutes.

2. It’s approachable

Rowing is great for fitness newbies because the machines can be customized to your fitness level.

Rowing is also a safe, active sport for folks who are blind or visually impaired. In a 2015 study of people with limited vision, participants who rowed 5 days a week for 6 weeks decreased their total body fat percentage and gained flexibility and strength.

3. Get low… low-impact, that is

Forget the joint stress of running on hard pavement. With rowing, you get to choose your movement and pace, which is *super* helpful when you’re recovering from an injury or marathon.

Rowing can even be a great choice for folks with early osteoarthritis. In a 2014 study, peeps who rowed for 8 weeks experienced 30 percent better joint rotations in their elbows, shoulders, and knees.

4. Ommm… it’s actually pretty meditative

Whether you row on the open water or in your living room, it’ll quickly become your daily dose of Zen. The smooth, repetitive steps of the row stroke — catch, drive, finish, and recovery — become trance-like after a while.

Like other exercise, rowing releases endorphins to boost your mood kick stress to the curb.

5. Hello, cardio!

Rowing isn’t just for strength training. Ergs are *amazing* for your heart and lungs.

Cardio workouts get your blood pumping to every part of your body, which could potentially prevent heart probs down the road.

6. Goodbye, treadmill boredom!

YOLO: So many people are swapping their treadmills, ellipticals, and exercise bikes for rowing machines.

Why? Personal trainer Shane Farmer of Dark Horse Rowing says, “Because it’s complete. If you look at an elliptical, treadmill, etc., all of those work one very specific muscle group.” Meanwhile, “the big benefit of the rowing machine is that you get everything hit at once.”

7. It’s easy on the wallet 🤑

You can snag a quality machine for $100 — that’s basically less than a month of hot yoga.

Some erg prices climb above $1k, but there are plenty of simple, streamlined options in the double digits. Plus, if you’re swapping your gym membership for a machine, you’ll be saving money in no time.

8. Toned legs for days

Never skip leg day, amirite?

The rowing machine works your legs and arms in one swift move, so you can kiss your unnecessarily complicated gym schedule goodbye.

Bonus: You’ll torch your butt, too.

9. Personal records

Some people just can’t resist a challenge. If you’re the type to arm wrestle someone twice your size or strain to break your PR in a 5K, try an erg.

Though you’ll move through the same motions, you can raise the resistance and push your speed as you become a more seasoned rower. Level-up action FTW.

10. You’ll crush calories

Health experts report that a 30-minute rowing session burns up to 377 calories.

We don’t have to tell you that the number on the scale isn’t everything. But if you’re trying to lose weight for health reasons, you need to burn more cals than you consume.

11. It’s totally cool now

So, #rowing is the fitness buzzword of the moment. But it wasn’t always that way.

“I’ve been putting out videos since 2015,” Farmer says of his rowing channel. “And I started with the idea of, I’m gonna make rowing cool. Well, here we are.”

Even if you don’t care about what’s trending, at least you’re likely to have a friend or two who can compare rowing #goalz.

12. Fun fitness FTW

Since rowing works most of your muscle groups, you really have to stay engaged while doing it. Basically, it takes just enough effort to keep things challenging and fun.

You can still binge-watch “Gossip Girl” while you row — but you might be feelin’ yourself too much to notice Chuck’s antics.

13. It’s like a 20-minute gig

You don’t need to spend half your life at the gym to reap results with an erg. It’s the MVP of jam-packed schedules everywhere.

The CDC recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous movement per week. Rowing sits somewhere between moderate and vigorous, so just 20 minutes a day more than covers your minimum.

14. Cardio + strength = a winning combo

In case you haven’t already heard, rowing machines knock out two birds with one stone (or two essential types of exercise with one sweet machine).

Ergs consistently strengthen your guns and pins while getting your heart pumping.

15. Brain gains

There are so many reasons to exercise — and most of them have nothing to do with a bangin’ bod. Hopping on your rowing machine could reduce stress, boost happy chemicals, and even combat cognitive decline.

16. Quarantine convenience, bby

You’re probably home a lot RN, and that could include gym time.

Unlike other exercise equipment, rowing machines fold up to easily slide under the bed or get tucked into a closet. Who needs a fancy home gym, anyway?

17. Change is good

Rowing is unfamiliar to many folks, so it takes patience and vulnerability to learn the ropes. Farmer says the slight learning curve of an erg could actually change your outlook on life.

“If you’re willing to say, ‘I need to learn this’ … you’re probably going to be willing to open up the rest of your life to say, ‘I need to learn other things. I don’t know it all,’” he says.

Let’s break down the rowing flow

Say it with me: Legs, core, arms. Arms, core, legs.

Here’s your step-by-step primer to using a rowing machine:

  1. Lock in. Strap your feet into the pads. Make sure they don’t slide around.
  2. Grab hold. Next, bring your knees up and reach for the front handlebar, aka the “catch.” Your torso should tilt slightly forward, but your spine should be straight.
  3. Activate the leg sequence. Use your leg muscles to push off the footplate. Really power-up those hamstrings.
  4. Engage your core. Squeeze your abs and lean backward. Just as you’re about to hit a 45-degree angle, pull the handlebar toward your bod and lightly touch your chest with it.
  5. Work your shoulders. You’ve reached what’s called the “finish.” For the big finale, pull your shoulder blades together.
  6. Flip it and reverse it. Now reverse the movement back to the catch. Extend your arms, pull your torso forward, bend your knees, and bring your legs up top. One stroke down! 👏

Achieving next-level form

Avoid injury and discomfort by focusing on perfect pacing and posture at the beginning of your #RowLyfe adventure.

Push, don’t pull

“Imagine the movement as a push, rather than trying to pull the handle,” says Farmer.

He explains that your rowing stroke should break down to about 60 percent leg work, 40 percent upper body. “If you’re thinking about pushing, odds are you’re going to use that larger muscle driving group, which is going to create a more effective stroke,” he adds.

Slow down

First form, then speed. Farmer encourages thinking about the rowing movements parts and concentrating on good form throughout.

“Slowing it down gives your brain time to process that and think through each,” he says. “Sequencing is really important to getting the entirety of the stroke right.”

The 20-min rowing workout

Farmer’s put together the perfect rowing machine workout to help you sweat it out and perfect your form.

Warm up

“You never want to jump into a workout cold,” says Farmer.

Try some light moves that wake your muscles without making your heart race:

Set up

Now, get your erg ready.

  1. Click “Select workout.”
  2. Choose “Single time.”
  3. Finally, change “Split length: to 1-minute intervals.

Let’s do this thing

Think of this workout as a ladder. You’ll work your way up to 25 strokes per minute, stay there for 2 minutes, then climb back down.

By varying your stroke speed, you get a smooth, moderately intense workout. Here’s the play-by-play.

The cool down

You did it! Now cool down for at least 5 minutes. Try lightly rowing, stretching, or walking.

Now pat yourself on the back for a job well done! 💪
