Starting in 2017 eligible physicians must participate in MIPS or an Alternative Payment Model (APM) to avoid financial penalties in 2019 from CMS. One type of APMs are certain government approved Accountable Care Organizations. Physicians can also participate in approved patient-centered medical homes to avoid penalties and also reap rewards.
